Okay, let’s watch today’s video. And always you know, we have to go through our sentence of the day. Here it goes.
Three, if your parents micromanaged you, you’re more like to develop depression. Okay, we’ve talked about codependency, but depression is also a damaging side-effect of authoritarian parenting.
1-1. micromanage [ˈmaɪkrəʊˌmænɪdʒ] (v.)細節管理;微觀管理(緊迫盯人)
It means to control every part of a situation, even small details.
A: Do you feel like your manager is micromanaging you guys?
B: Well, he’s the boss. What can I say?
So micromanage is sort of like the highest level of managing. For me, I really don’t like this. Sometimes your manager, your parents, they just hover. They’re kinda like helicopter parents. They’re always around you telling you what should you do, and telling you that what you should eat, what you should see, what you shouldn’t do. This is what we called micromanaging.
+hovering parents
hover [ˋhʌvɚ] (v.) (鳥等)盤旋;(直升機)停留在空中
2. be likely to 很有可能...
It means that’s highly possible for one to do something, or for something to happen. It is very common usage but you don’t use it when you’re writing something. If you’re writing something you would actually say: highly possible. So remember this is probably more for conversations.
* It is very likely to rain.
= It’s highly possible that it might rain.
* He is very likely to be late.
= It’s high possible this person is going to be late. He is probably going to be late.
3-1. depression [dɪˋprɛʃən] (n.)憂鬱症
In the sentence, depression means a mental illness in which a person is very unhappy and anxious or worried and nervous for long periods and cannot have a normal life during these periods. But it can also be a state of mind, so you can say the state of feeling very unhappy and without hope for the future.
* I was overwhelmed by feelings of depression.
That means you’re just very sad, and you’re overwhelmed by sadness because it is the feeling of depression.
3-2. depressing (adj.) 令人沮喪的,使人感到壓抑的(心好累)
If something is depressing then something is making you feel unhappy and without hope for the future. Depressing is actually a very useful word. For example, if the weather is bad, you can say the weather is depressing. Or if somebody baked you a piece of cake, and it just looks really sad, it’s flat, it’s not even puffy, not even fluffy. And you can say the cake looks depressing.
Alright, people, that’s all today’s pronunciation challenge. Thank you for listening, thank you for tuning in. Please make sure to leave a comment and recording, and stay strong, and I’ll see you next time!
