Note
... What do you think about the death penalty? Is it meant to punish the person? Or to provide closure(關閉) for those who are affected? I’m going to jump right into today’s sentence and vocabulary words ,because I want to spend more time talking about this topic after the lesson.
It turns out that states with the penalty have had higher murder rates.

1. death penalty 死刑
It means the legal punishment of death for a crime.
*People who receive the death penalty get to choose what they have for their last meal.

2. high (adj.) (比通常水準)高的,多的
It means greater than usual level or amount.
*There is a higher chance of meeting a celebrity(名人) than winning the lottery.

3. murder (n.) 謀殺,兇殺
It means the crime of intentionally(蓄意地) killing a person.
*I wonder what goes on in someone’s brain or mind before they murder a person.

… And now to the topic of today’s video. So the US has the most people in prison and the highest prison rate.(美國擁有最多的囚犯,最高的判罪率). And there’s one thing in the US has been a topic by a lot of people have been talking about, which is “ the school-to-prison pipeline(輸送管)”. This is a process where minors(未成年人) or young adults from not so good areas or backgrounds are becoming incarcerated(被監禁的) meaning they are put into prison because of harsh school policies. And usually that means they will drop out from school(退學), they won’t achieve or be successful as someone who [[?had went through]] school, their grades are not so well. And they will have problems with other people or in school. That’s why they end up potentially joining the wrong people or doing into young adult prison and then later on to adult prison. This is a huge issue in the US, because of a lot of factors including income(收入), race(種族), police, bias(偏見), meanings they don’t realize that they treat people differently based on their race or other factors and sentencing, which is how long someone is punished for crime they committed.

The recidivism(累犯) rate in the US is very high. Recidivism means someone [[?were commit]] another crime even though they were punished for previous crime or crimes that they did before. The sad truth of reality in the US is that the rate is so high. Partly because of not having enough resources to help people once they leave prison, they are not able to find jobs easily because they have been in prison. And they might not even have skills that are needed for the jobs they want to do. And also there’s no ability for them to settle back into the society meaning there’s no assistance(協助) to help them get back on their feet(重新站起來), not just for work or employment but also for housing, food, and other resources. It is depending on how long on they have been in prison, they might come out to a whole new world. Just like some of the movies that we’ve seen. And then another sad fact is that they might not have a lot of friends ,meaning the only people they know are those they’ve met in prison. And not all of them come out being better people or are able to get back on their feet. So if they end up becoming friends with people who are still doing bad things or committing crimes, they are more likely themselves to follow those friends do things that are considered illegal.
And another thing to think about is person doesn’t learn anything when they are in jail for a longer time or they’ve received the death penalty.

And in the US, there are many horror stories about the death penalty and what they use to end someone’s life. And a lot of times, there isn’t even a medical professional around or the right medicine to give to the person so that they can die quickly and easily.

If you’re interested in this topic and you have some time , feel free to look on VoiceTube the video called “How Norway designed a more humane(人道的) prison.”

I hope today’s topic will get you brain moving and thinking.
