This is what Japanese really eat at a cheap chicken izakaya So I'm here in Shibuya, one of the busiest areas in Tokyo for people to hang out, eat and drink with friends And today I'm taking you to a popular and cheap chicken izakaya, Teke Teke, to show you what Japanese people really order So that you can order it for yourself.

All right, let's get our izakaya on So Japanese izakayas known as drinking restaurants is a huge part of Japanese social culture Intended for groups of people to gather and drink while eating small dishes together and often There's way too many items to choose from so I'm here to help walk you through it as it can be intimidating for first-timers And what better way to show you the ins and outs than at Teke Teke here in Shibuya as they have all the goodies In fact, there's actually different types of izakayas focused on different foods But today we're hitting up this chicken izakaya If you do want to see other types of izakayas, let me know in the comments Okay, so here we are in this lovely izakaya I'm so excited to show you guys all of this wonderful food that we can eat so cheaply What should we do first?

Number one, Tsukune chicken balls Okay So we're just gonna go with one of the go-tos that Japanese people really really love and it is Tsukune It's like one of my favorite dishes ever, these chicken izakayas So basically it's kind of like a minced chicken and it's usually eaten with raw egg Sweet tare sauce or even salted all the stores do it a little bit different this place instead of using breast Which is usual they use thigh meat and it's just super juicy Look at all of the oils and the juices are coming up from this.

I just gotta take a bite Wow That is like an umami bomb inside of your mouth it has like some cartilage in there gives it crunchy texture inside This is perfectly salted.

It has kind of like a really really savory taste See these green little flecks that shiso gives it another flavor complexity Number two chicken nanban fried chicken and tartar sauce and this next one is probably one of my personal favorites It is the chicken nanban It's basically Japanese fried chicken with a healthy portion of tartar sauce because you know Nothing beats some crispy fried loveliness topped with a sweet and tangy Wonderland like sauce That it's the whole sauce stuff like a Friday night at the club.

Let me just dip that in now This is so good.

You can see all the mayonnaise getting all in the sauce That is beautiful and there's tartar sauce is just phenomenal It's kind of like a sweet and sour tanginess got the mayonnaise got the egg in there Oh, man, these tender little filets and you guys got to come here.

You gotta go try all these izakaya foods You will not be disappointed So going to an izakaya definitely one of the highlights for many people especially Japanese It's coming here to drink and here you go.

So beers and sours are usually fairly inexpensive at places I guess this beer is like around $1.50.

So it's rather Inexpensive and let me just take a drink for the team We are doing this izakaya right and then lemon sour you will see in a lot of izakayas They have shochu mixed with carbonated water.

They put some lemons in here Sometimes they have like a lemon juice this place also has jars are filled with lemon juice inside of it And before you drink you should always mix it like this mix mix mix mix mix mix lovely refreshing drink That's sparkling goodness number three negi mug It's a combination of green onion and chicken thigh and for sure it's a go-to yakitori item for many Japanese It smells so good what's different about this place is that it is rather large Super super heavy.

Look at all that drippiness drip drip drip Wow, that is beautiful This also is another juicy juicy sensation and their sauce is on point This is definitely not Japanese sized portions Not to mention that the charcoal green onions become sweeter from the heat and slightly stickier which helps highlight the chickens umami Oh, let's move on to the next one.

Shishito sweet green peppers It just feels like you know calling someone grilled cheese, ito is another popular staple at yakitori izakaya restaurants It's a nice refreshing break when you've been killing all those chicken skewers Bite That's the freshness we needed, you know running through our system a little bit This shishito has kind of like a good bitterness when you are at an izakaya like this Sometimes you have to do some vegetables.

They have cucumbers tofu They will cater to some people that also want to have some healthier foods Number five bonjiri Pope's nose.

This next one always just makes me laugh for some reason.

They call it the Pope's nose It's pretty much the chicken's butt.

It's the chicken's butt I don't even know if I'm supposed to say this take a bite of this Wow This one is salted.

I think it's all of the natural oils coming from that juicy juicy butt But you know what?

I'm gonna kind of throw in my hot sauce Sometimes when you know, there's just not enough spice and you want a little bit of that Japanese hot.

It is quite spicy for some people I can do quite a bit probably just want to start off just a little bit of a dab and put it on here like that That is umami licious is a premium coming out II hot sauce is just so much fire Mixing with the kanzuri and the Carolina Reaper and that show you base just gives so much flavor obviously I got permission to put the hot sauce on here because usually Sometimes you don't bring sauce into an establishment like this, but definitely had to try it So if you guys want to get some of this Japanese hot you can just click on the link below the video or you can Go to Palo from Tokyo hot sauce calm number six takawasa octopus and wasabi sauce Let's take a little bit of a kind of a seafood break and this is the takawasa another kind of like appetizer Style dish or kind of like a side dish So like the point of these izakayas here in Japan is to come here hang out with some friends have some food have some drinks And you don't need to have like a lot of food, but eating all this food while you're also drinking So this is like a perfect addition to that drinking It's like a little bit gooey and it might be an acquired taste.

Let me just take a bite Look at that drippy drip a little bit more Octopus nice and crunchy great texture.

The soup itself is a little bit savory on like the saltier side It might be a little bit slimy for some people But I quite enjoy it and it has onions and peppers and then it has some wasabi as well And sometimes the wasabi is a really really strong.

They're like, whoa, but this one here is actually not too bad It's just a little bit of a kick.

Okay, I'm feeling a little bit It's starting to come on number seven marinated quail egg and another local favorite is aji tama was it up?

It's actually marinated in a soy sauce base or dashi.

It's nothing flashy, but it's definitely a comfort snack That's easy on the stomach and definitely makes me smile.

Let me just take a bite of this Mmm, I love how it's been marinated and like a soy sauce taste a little sesame there as well They have just a lot of flavor coming from these little eggs.

This is one of those staple hitters Mmm, number eight kawa chicken skin You may think chicken skin is extremely oily but neck skin which has less fat is often used It's somewhat oily, but when it's slowly grilled, it creates a juiciness and crispiness that can't be denied.

Let me just have some of this Yes, that is a properly crispy but it also has a little bit of a chewy texture on the inside So a bunch of different textures all in one.

This is quite popular order for izakayas I never actually tried until I got to Japan, I think so with kawaii really depends on the shop Some cook it really really crispy while others cook it a little bit softer So it really depends on where you go and you can try it out at all the different spots number nine Tebasaki fried chicken wings.

Let's get it Alright, look at this Teba kushi.

Teba's chicken wing kushi means it's on a skewer Just like this and they have their special sauce on it Wow, look at this like my mama used to say ain't no thing but a chicken wing I don't know if she actually really said that usually you don't see chicken wings all stretched out like this Wow has a little bit of that pepper goodness, too It's a perfectly crunchy on the outside that meat inside is so luscious Moisture see all that the juices coming from it.

Ah I'm so glad I ordered three of these number ten Ochasuke rice and soup a lot of people will have this towards the end of the meal just to kind of See me.

So It has like a really really strong dashi this one some people actually use tea Instead of dashi and it has these little beady things in here It's called a da day kind of like little senbei crackers gives it additional texture and the crunchiness You mix it around you can see that the seaweed and everything is starting to meld all into one Beautiful.

This is a great way to finish off your meal Very very Japanese style.

I think when I say that it triggers some people only got one wife.
