Hi everyone! I’m Lian. Welcome come back to the pronunciation challenge. Happy Friday! It’s been a really long time since last time we met. How are you, guys? Today, we’re going to learn some tips that help us to socialize more easily and naturally. I think some of them actually work even if you’re a shy person. So don’t forget to watch today’s video and learn some tips for not being a boring person. Alright, let’s look at today’s sentence.

People with positive high-energy outlooks invariably have habits that prime them to feel excited and you can adopt those same habits to get the same results.

So first, you can breathe after the words like positive, habits, and excited. And why should we pause after positive? that’s because they’re two adjectives here. One is positive, and the other is high-energy. To differentiate([͵dɪfəˋrɛnʃɪ͵et] v.區分) these adjectives so we have to pause after the first adjective, which is positive. And we can put the stress on words like invariably, habits and prime. If you listen to the video, you’ll find that the host he exaggerated the word invariably, you can imitate the version if you want to be more dramatic. As for the pronunciation, there’re a few words that we need to be more careful when pronouncing. So the first one is outlook. The word look, the vowel is not [u], so it’s not [luk], instead it’s [ˋaʊt͵lʊk]. And the other word is invariably [ɪnˋvɛrɪəb!ɪ], there are 5 syllables([ˋsɪləb!]音節)in the word, so try to pronounce each syllable as clear as possible. And the third one is feel, it’s not ... or ...or something else. It’s just [i], the long vowel [i], so it’s [fil]. And the last word is same, the long vowel [e]. I know it’s pretty hard for Asian people to pronounce the long vowel [e], so try to practice as more as you can. And the final part for today’s pronunciation is a bunch of words in the second half of the sentence. If you listen carefully then you’ll find out that the host only spent like 3 seconds to finish all the 12 words of the second half of the sentence. So that means you have to finish 4 words in one second. Of course, we don’t have to be so strict to ourselves but we can still practice and try to pronounce it more naturally. So adopt those same habits to get the same results. So we can split the long sentence into two parts, which is “adopt those same habits“ and “to get the same results.” And if you want to read the sentence more quickly you can drop the [t] for adopt. And of course don’t pronounce to as [tu] but pronounce it as [ə], so you can pronounce [tə gɛ ðə], to get the same results. And that’s all for the pronunciation part. So let’s read the sentence again. “ People with positive high-energy outlooks invariably have habits that prime them to feel excited and you can adopt those same habits to get the same results.”

1-1. prime [praɪm] (v.)使 (某人) 有所準備
The word prime has so many meanings, so let’s talk about the meaning in the video first. So in today’s video, prime refers to tell someone something that will prepare them for a particular situation. For example, prime somebody to do or for something, or somebody be primed.

* The loud noise outside the door had primed me to call the police.

1-2. prime (n.) 全盛時期,壯年
If you prime as a noun, it refers to the most active or satisfying stage or period. For example, in somebody’s prime.(在某人的巔峰期)
+ He died in the prime of his life.

1-3. prime (adj.) 主要的,基本的,最重要的,品質最好的

If you use prime as an adjective, it may refer to the main or most important. For example, prime suspect([ˋsəspɛkt]嫌疑犯) or prime minister(首相,總理). Or it can refer to having the highest quality or value. For example, prime steak(上等牛肉), or prime location(黃金地段).

2-1. invariably [ɪnˋvɛrɪəb!ɪ] (adv.)總是、老是
It means in the most situation, it basically means always. The definition is on every occasion or always.
* He invariably changes his mind at the last minute every time he makes a decision.

2-2. invariable [ɪnˋvɛrɪəb!] (adj.) 不改變的,始終如一的
It means not changing or capable of change. For example, invariable routine(不變的慣例). But if you drop the prefix of in, then it will become variable, which means able.

3-1. adopt [əˋdɑpt] (v.)採用、養成 (某種習慣)
The definition of adopt is to take up and practice or use. For example, adopt a new method. And the other definition is to start behaving in a particular way, especially by choice. For example, adopt a new habit.

* After he adopts the habit of meditating in the morning, he will become calmer and more patient.
+ meditate [ˋmɛdə͵tet] (v.) 冥想,沉思= to think seriously about something, especially over a period of time.

3-2. adopt (v.) 領養

Also adopt can refer to legally take another person's child into your own family and take care of him or her as your own child. For example, adopt a baby.

3-3. adapt [əˋdæpt] (v.) 使適應
Many people would mix adopt with the word adapt. But the meaning is different.

Adapt refers to change something, to suit different conditions or uses.
+ He tried hard to adapt himself to the new conditions.

Okay, l guess that’s for today. Thank you guys for listening. After watching today’s video, I think it’s more important to expand your vision rather than simply being good at socializing. Sometimes it’s a lot easier to just be a social butterfly. Most people can do it even if they are just fake([fek] v.假裝)in it. But by learning new things and challenging yourself is actually better for you. Being a more sociable([ˋsoʃəb!] 善交際的) person can make you more charming as well.

Leave a comment below if you have anything to share with me or the other listeners. Tell me your thoughts about this video and you can also share your ideas on how to be a more interesting person. Please share your story with us, we will love to hear them.

See you next week, happy Friday!
