NOTE:
I just got back from the Philippines, it’s a pretty interesting place. The beaches are really beautiful, the sun was warm and soothing(使人平靜的), the water was so clear and blue. You don’t even have high quality goggles, just regular, cheap goggles will fine. And you can just dive into water and look under the water. It’s just really interesting and fun, but it’s just really primitive(原始的) place. There was a road construction everywhere, and the road was pumpy. If you get hurt, you might not be able to get any medical help. I guess this is the first time I’ve ever seen something like this. You know, maybe the first Southeast Asian country that I’ve been to. But Singapore is different, more of cities. Like I always say, travel makes you smarter , ‘cause you get to see things that you’ve never seen before.
Back to today’s topic, the video is called “How eating out keeps you poor.” So our office was relocated lately, and we moved into a building which is right across from to Taipei arena, and the food here is really expensive. During summer time or even now it’s October, it’s usually still very burning hot. So I refuse to walk outside, also I [[have saved up ]]and went to 3 countries this year. And the most importantly,[[? I got fat ]], so I’m just trying to eat healthy by making my own meals. Anyways, let’s check today’s video together.
We gotta go through sentence of the day, and I’m really for my voice. It’s been 2 weeks , l’m still weak. But I swear I was totally fine when I was in the water of the Philippines, but you know the moment I got back, I was sick again. So bear with me here. Here we go.
“Now, there are a lot of reasons for this, the increasing cost of housing, health insurance, and of course, student debt.”
Today’s episode isn’t gonna to be long because tomorrow is gonna be the long weekend in Taiwan. It’s October 9th today as I’m recording, which means it’s the last day when all clinics are gonna be opened. I gotta go get a tetanus(破傷風) shot because I scratched(劃傷) and cut myself in the sea, and the middle pipes, they were so rusty, and I really don’t want anything that happen to me, so I’m gonna make a shorter episode today.
And of course, enjoy your double ten holiday, it’s very important to enjoy every moment of happiness.
1-1. cost (v.)
Cost is a noun. It means the amount of money needed to buy, do, or make something. For instance, if I bought a cup of coffee, l paid 35 dollars for it, then the 35 dollars is the cost of the coffee. Or you can say the price of the coffee. So you can say the cost of the coffee was 35 dollars.
1-2. cost (v.)
And if you would like use word as a verb, if you do so, the sentence’s structure is gonna change a little bit. It’s gonna look like this: This cup of coffee costs me 35 dollars.
2-1. insurance (n.)
Insurance is a noun, it’s basically an agreement in which you pay a company money and they pay your costs if you have an accident, injury, etc. So there are all kinds of insurance. For example, if I’m traveling abroad more than a week, I will definitely get a insurance ‘cause you would never know what might happen. Especially for a hardcore traveler like me, a person who likes to try all kinds of risky activities, having a insurance would definitely help. Like I accidentally fell, a piece of my [[?flash]] on my foot was scraped off(刮). And I was just walking in the street and like I said it’s a primitive place, the condition of the street isn’t very good. So I fell and it was crazy, there was blood everywhere. And as I was snorkelling(用水下呼吸管潛水) l scratched to my leg, it was a deep cut. And I took a look at the pipe that cut me, the pipe was crazy rusty and it was in the sea. So I was really worried that something is gonna happen. So that’s definitely the reason why I’m getting a tetanus shot tonight. And in these situations that’s when the insurance comes in handy. So what are those common insurances? We got life insurance, we got health insurance, car insurance, travel insurance.
What are your thoughts on travel insurance? Do you think that’s necessary?
2-2. ensure (v.)
And here is something extra for you. There’s another word that sounds very similar to the word insurance, that is ensure, it means to make something certain to happen. Two similar words, you wanna be able to tell the difference. Keep that in mind.
* Did you get your travel insurance for this trip? I did. It a must.
3. debt (n.)
It means something, especially money, that is owed to someone else, or the state of owing something. It is a very common form of debt among younger people, it’s probably student debt. A lot of graduates are in debt, because of the student loan as college tuition can be very expensive .
It usually takes a year to pay off your debt. Now, notice the phrase I am using: pay off. If you pay off your debt that means you’re debt-free. You paid every cent you needed to pay, and you no longer to owe anyone, any money.
* I‘m very careful with my money and financial choices, because I don’t want to be in debt.
If you’re in debt that means you have debt, you owe somebody money or maybe bank, or any sort of organization.
Before we go, l wanna talk to you guys about this phrase, that is of course. Yes, it’s very easy, everybody knows this. But there is a common mistake that people make. A lot of times, l see people writing the phrase into one word. I know it sounds like there’s only one word but there’s actually two words in this phrase. This phrase is very commonly used. But there are actually many other words or phrases you can use to replace this phrase. So you don’t have to say this all the time. You can say: “Sure thing!” or “ Absolutely!”. These two would all work, and I use them all the time.
Please do pray for me that I will be okay.
