Hello everyone, welcome to today's pronunciation challenge, my name is Helena and I will be your new host on Sundays. To briefly introduce myself, I was born in California and was raised in Taiwan. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a native speaker. My English skills were so bad years ago, so my mom used to tease(取笑) me that I was always better in English when I was two. But at some points of my life, I started to realize that being able to speak English is really important. So I decided to take it more seriously and tried to learn in any possible way(s?). I’m (?was) also used to use VoiceTube and pronunciation challenge a lot before, so it’s really amazing but also weird for me for being a host here at this moment.
My English listening and speaking improved the most in past two years. I studied in Hong Kong for two years. I studied IB ,which offers an internationally accredited(鑑定合格的) diploma(文憑). In the period of two years, I had to speak English every day to survive there, and that’s how the environment really push me to improve faster.
國際文憑 IB: International Baccalaureate[͵bækəˋlɔrɪɪt]
So really give yourselves more chances to listen and speak English. The progress(進步) will happen eventually.
To talk a bit of my school in Hong Kong, it’s a pretty special school called United World College. And one of its most important value is to celebrate diversity(差異). So in practice, we have students from more than 80 countries in the world , living and studying together. It’s a very diversity yet(卻) challenging place to live. And there are also a lot of interesting things happening, many lessons learned, and I can’t wait to share my experiences with you soon.
Moving on to today’s video: How binge-watching(追劇) is changing everything. You’re right, the first topic I want to discuss with you is binge-watching. Binge-watching is pretty much a twenty-first century term(專有名詞) which is used to describe a new phenomenon(現象) that people watch five to ten or even twenty episodes of TV series a day. When online streaming platforms like Netflix or YouTube channel become more and more common, people don’t need to wait for weeks and weeks to watch TV shows. Instead, they can finish the all series within a day and without any disturbances(干擾) from the ADs. Let’s get today’s sentence.
“As more and more streaming players get into the game, the question becomes, how much we're willing to stretch our wallets and attention spans to include new services.”

1. streaming [/ˈstriː.mɪŋ/] (n.) (音頻或視頻的)分流,線上收聽(或收看)
It’s the activity of listening or watching sound or video directly from the Internet. The common ways of using it, you can say online streaming or live streaming.
* We can watch sports competition on live streaming platforms and cheer(歡呼) for the players.
* The TV industry is dying, not only are online streaming services like Netflix and YouTube getting their audiences(觀眾) away from TV watchers, but social media and online news platforms are also talking audiences away from traditional news broadcast(廣播).
This sentence reminds me of something I just watched recently, that was saying the online market has become more and more competitive, even Disney is entering the game. TV, on the other hand, is losing a large percentage of their audiences. But a lot of TV are now coming with Internet service. So the cable industry is also involving. What do you guys think? Do you think the TV industry will die eventually? Or they will survive in this huge competition?

2. stretch [/stretʃ/ ] (v.) 伸出;伸長;拉伸
It means to cause something to reach often as far as possible in a particular direction.
* I stretched out my hand to take the pen on the other side of the table.

Stretching(n.) means warming up before exercise. 身體拉伸、暖身

* You are going to bankrupt(破產), don’t you think it’s a bit of stretch to say that?

3. attention [ /əˈten.ʃən/] (n.) 注意,留心;考慮;關心
It means notice, thought, or interest.
* The teacher would often ask students pay attentions in the class.

* He tries hard to be the center of attention(目光焦點).
center of attention
= to be under the spotlight(聚光燈)
= being in the spotlight

get someone’s attention 吸引某人(心儀對象)的注意
When you want to cause someone to pay attention on you. You can say: Attention, please. Or politely, may I have your attention, please? It is also commonly used to on in a way that you want to get someone’s attention.
* How can I get her attention?
The person usually means someone that you like.

4. Span(n.) 一段時間
It means the period of time that sometimes exists or happens.
* The average life span(平均壽命) of a woman is longer than men.

over a span(period) of something
* Over a span of 5 years, the war has killed thousands of people.

The span here can directly be replaced by period.and it becomes “over a period of something”.

Lastly, I want to share a bit of my experiences with binge-watching. Binge-watching is one of my guilty pleasure(有愧疚感的,樂事). But the thing is I don’t usually plan to binge-watching stuff, when I start to watch something, I can’t stop myself from clicking the next episode,it’s just so tempting.
Do you prefer binge-watching and finishing the all series within a day or waiting for a weekly updates?
