Let's learn the rule for how to pronounce the S and the ed suffix at the end of a word.

So this is your American English Sounds master class series, and

for the next two weeks, we are going to be practicing this s&ed suffix.

Right, so let's go ahead and jump right in with the lesson.

All right, let's start with when we add an ed.

So the suffix ed is just a neutral suffix.

That means it is not going to change the pronunciation of the word in terms of stress of the syllables.

So we are going to still say the stress the same way.

And I have a bunch of lessons posted on those.

But for today, we are only going to be talking about the sounds that we use when we add these suffixes to the word.

So that makes things a little bit easier.

So when we add an ed to a word, we have three possible options for pronouncing these endings.

Let's talk about voicing versus voiceless sounds.

If you've been watching my classes, I do talk about this often.

So a voiceless sound means that your voice box is off.

That is the part of your throat that vibrates, that is your larynx.

So a voiceless sound does not use that to make the sound.

You can hear it, just a very quiet sound.

Now if you put your hand on your throat and you say the D sound, just you can feel your voice box vibrating.

Just when I say the sounds, you can see this kind of engages a little bit more, this part of my throat for that D sound.

Let's try the T and then the D and then id.

And we have that vowel with the consonant sound, the D.

All right, so this rule makes sense because when we add an ed to a word, if the word ends in a voiceless sound, like, we are going to just add another voiceless sound.

Now, if the word ends in a voice sound, that's any sound where your throat is vibrating like a vowel, A, E, I, O, or U can also be a sound like B, D, and

G, then we are going to add another V voiced sound, the D.

So voiceless sound followed by a voiceless T.

Voiced sound followed by a voiced D. We have two exceptions to this.

It's also really difficult to say we don't usually have the T and D together in English.

So we are going to add a vowel and then add that D sound.

So let's look at some examples of this rule.

So let's just, first of all, listen as I read to the words that end in the voiceless sound.

Okay, we're not thinking about the spelling.

We are thinking about the sound that the word ends in.

So we have tap, cough, talk, bath, wish, crunch, pass.

These are all sort of quiet sounds, the voiceless sounds at the end.

Okay, so let's move on to row number two, which is the voice sound.

Buzz, buzzed, call, called tag, tagged, Love, loved, breathe, breathed, fire, hired, calm, calmed, judged, judged, sew, sewed.

Okay, now for the T and the D. This is our last option.

And we are going to add ID for a lot of my students.

If you want to get fancy and you want to use the flap T like we do in American English, think about ending with the syllable did.

Okay, so I'm going to take off the last sound, going to add a syllable, and

my syllable that I'm adding is going to be did, like the word did, like I did it.

Okay, so we have melt, melted, trade, traded, melted, traded, melted, traded.

Okay, so now let me make these words bigger for you.

What sound you would use, and then I'm going to tell you the correct answer.

Tap, tap, buzz, buzzed, Coughed, talk, talked, call, Tag, tagged, melt, melted, trade, traded.

I'm going to say the word and then you add the T to this list.

Okay, now let's try adding D to these voiced endings.
