Well, it's actually a snack called churchkhela, and it's delicious.

Churchkhelas are traditional Georgian sweets that have been made for thousands of years.

They're kind of like the original energy bar.

If stored properly, they can last up to a year, making them ideal for long journeys.

It's thought that Georgian soldiers once relied on them.

For traveling long distances and for nourishment before battle.

I've been making churchkhela for almost 50 years.

We make churchkhela in autumn, after we harvest the grapes.

We squeeze out the juice to use for the churchkhelas.

The inner layer is made of nuts which are threaded onto a central piece of string.

And the outer layer is made of grape juice.

To make churchkhela, we need grape juice, string, needle, flour, and hazelnuts or walnuts.

The ingredients do vary, based on which region of Georgia you are in.

The east region is known for using wheat flour and walnuts.

The west region is known for using corn flour, hazelnuts and walnuts.

We take the grape juice and place it over a fire.

We partially add the flour into the raw grape juice.

We thread nuts on a tough piece of string that has a needle on the end.

And this is dipped in a hot mixture of grape juice and flour.

After, we hang the churchkhela to dry in the sun.

After it dries, we eat, but I don't have teeth, so I can't eat it.

Churchkhelas taste sweet and have a soft elastic consistency with a crumbly center.

Over the years, churchkhela has traveled across borders, regional versions exist across Europe, the Caucasus and the Middle East.

Churchkhela can have different tastes or color depending on the grape juice.

You don't need to add preservatives because the churchkhela is so high in sugars, it preserves itself.

As time passes, it gets a bit harder to chew and even more delicious.

With correct conditions, churchkhela can last about a year.

In my house, churchkhela can't survive even a day.
