I'm Izzy, your real-life English fluency coach, and

today we're going to have fun learning useful everyday expressions in English with Marvel's Deadpool.

And the scene that we will watch today is really funny even if you haven't watched any of the Deadpool movies.

It's basically him and his friend trying to put together a team of superheroes by interviewing all these different people who have superpowers.

I can distort electrical fields, including the one inside your brain, causing anxiety, confusion, pain.

So you have the power to put your finger on the pulse of society?

And how about all those advanced English expressions, like zeitgeist, to put your finger on the pulse of society, to take your word for it?

We've got several expressions here already.

We'll learn each one of these, and there will be many more later in the lesson.

So when the character Bedlam says, "I can distort electrical fields, including the one inside your brain, causing anxiety, confusion, pain." He means he can mess with electricity.

He can do things with it, even the tiny electrical signals inside a person's brain.

Our brains use tiny electric signals to think, feel, and move.

So if someone distorts or messes up those signals, you might feel dizzy, that is, without balance, confused, or anxious, like a scrambled TV signal.

If you're not familiar with him, Dave Matthews is the lead singer of the Dave Matthews Band, a band which is known for its smooth, emotional, and

sometimes trippy music, meaning it can make people feel deeply or even a little spaced out.

Deadpool is jokingly comparing the character's ability to mess with brains to the effect Dave Matthews' music has on people's emotions.

Zeitgeist is a German word that literally means "spirit of the time." However, we generally use it in English to refer to the mood, culture, or ideas that define a particular period in history and how people collectively think or feel during that time.

Think of fashion, music, and trends that make a certain time feel special, like 1990s zeitgeist.

Think boy bands, baggy jeans, and dial-up internet.

If you're old enough, you may remember this sound.

Well, think TikTok, AI, and avocado toast.

So you can see the next line is funny when Deadpool responds.

So you have the power to put your finger on the pulse of society.

We use this phrase, "put your finger on the pulse of something," to mean understanding what is happening right now with something.

Now, the original meaning of this comes from checking a person's pulse, that is, their heartbeat, like tuk, tuk, tuk, tuk, which you can do by placing your finger on your wrist or maybe on your neck like this.

If you can feel it, you'll know how fast a person's heart is beating and specifically about their physical condition at the moment.

Similarly, if you put your finger on the pulse of society, you understand what people think and care about at the moment.

Check out this example with the TV series Ozark.

Jonas, what we're really looking for here is a press manager with their finger on the pulse because if you don't have your finger on the pulse, then you're not going to be able to connect with the 18 to 29s who are going to swing the election.

If something is acidic, it has acid in it, or it feels like acid.

Acids are usually liquids which can burn, dissolve things, or taste sour, like lemon juice or vinegar.

So basically, the character zeitgeist has the ability to spray vomit from his mouth, which is dangerous and can melt stuff.

If you say that you'll take someone's word for it, that means you believe them and that they don't need to prove themselves.

For example, if someone gives you an envelope with a payment saying that there's $500 inside and you accept it without checking it, you are taking their word for it.

You are choosing to trust what they're saying.

Here, Deadpool makes fun of Arby's, a popular American fast food restaurant chain known for its roast beef sandwiches.

He jokes that Arby's food might upset your stomach and cause you to vomit.

So he's comparing zeitgeist acidic vomit to a bad fast food experience.

And this is a good example, by the way, of why understanding culture matters if you want to get the jokes in English.

Now let's listen to this part again and pay attention to the way he pronounces all those words together.

This is a great example of connected speech, the way natives cut and link and morph words when they speak.

First, notice that "we've all" sounds more like "we've all." It's basically all linked.

"Eaten at" becomes "eaten at." First of all, see if you can say the verb "eaten" like this.

I know it may sound strange, but this is how Americans usually say words like button, written, eaten.

That special sound you hear is a glottal stop, like when you say, "Uh-oh, uh-oh." So you should make the glottal stop and follow it with an N sound, like "nn." Uh-oh, eatn.

So the word "eaten" gets linked to the word "at," resulting in "eaten at." Finally, he links "at" to Arby's.

So what you hear is not "at Arby's," but "at Arby's." The T sound morphed into a quick D sound, which is what we call a flap T, very common in American English.

It happens when a T is between two vowel sounds, like the word "water," or in the phrase "at Arby's." So let's practice the entire sentence.
