You're in the right place because in today's video I'm going to teach you how to speak English better than the majority of native English speakers.

Believe it or not, native English speakers make mistakes all the time when speaking their own language.

Trust me, I know, I'm a native speaker myself.

Just because somebody speaks English as a first language doesn't mean they speak English correctly.

So over the next few minutes we're going to look at the most common mistakes native English speakers make when speaking English.

By the end of the video you'll know a few things that most native English speakers don't.

They sound the same, but they have different meanings.

This is a mistake that I see all the time from native English speakers.

There with RE indicates location, or the existence of something.

There with they're is a contraction of they are.

Most people pronounce these words the same, but they're spelled differently.

Your with RE is a contraction of you are.

And it's with no apostrophe indicates possession.

So I'm sure you can see why native speakers often confuse these words.

They sound the same, but they're spelled differently.

Next up we have could have, would have, and should have.

Native speakers often say coulda, woulda, shoulda.

And this is correct, there's nothing wrong with saying could have or coulda, should have or shoulda, or woulda, or woulda.

The problem here is that the VE sounds like the word of.

So native speakers often write could of instead of could of with a VE.

The only people I've seen who've made this mistake are actually native speakers.

Another grammar mistake that native speakers make all the time is saying things like him and I went to the store.

We need to say he and I went to the store.

So we wouldn't say him and me or him and I went to the store, we'd say he and I went to the store.

Now look at this sentence, I couldn't care less.

But a lot of native speakers erroneously say I could care less, which actually means the opposite if you think about it.

So the correct phrase here is I couldn't care less.

I'm going to give you four words that are difficult for native speakers and non-native speakers alike to spell.

Look very carefully at the spelling and you can pause the video if you need to.

But a lot of native speakers actually put an E instead of the first A, which is totally wrong.

Many native speakers forget the second R, which is a mistake.

And lastly, we have a double M in the word accommodate.

A lot of native speakers forget that second M.

They only write it with one M, but that's actually wrong.

Now the next mistake on our list is confusing less and fewer.

I gotta admit something, this is a mistake I've made a few times without even realizing it.

You might hear a native speaker say something like less people showed up.

But this is actually wrong, we need to say fewer people showed up.

Less is used for singular or uncountable nouns, and fewer is used for plural or countable nouns.

So less time, less money, less water, but fewer people, fewer things, fewer dogs.

Another common mistake that native speakers make is saying things like I did good on the test.

We need to use an adverb, so we'd say I did well on the test.

Good is normally an adjective, whereas to modify a verb we need an adverb,

What's the difference between then and then?

Then with an E indicates time, whereas then with an A indicates comparison.

They sound very similar, especially when we speak quickly, but they're spelled differently.

So a lot of native speakers mix these up.

Alright, lastly, I want to talk to you about pronunciation, because there are a couple words that I hear native speakers pronouncing incorrectly all the time.

Believe it or not, the first word is pronunciation.

You'll hear native speakers say pronounciation.

Which makes sense because the verb is to pronounce, but as a noun it's actually pronunciation.

If you look very closely, there's no O before the U, so we just say pronunciation.

And the other word that I hear native speakers get wrong very often is the word espresso.
