When you're in a work meeting and you want to say something, you want to share an idea, share an opinion, share an update, do you catch yourself shrinking right before you speak?

You wait, you hesitate, you observe, you look around and then by the time that you're ready to say something, the moment's gone, the moment has passed, people have moved on and you miss your opportunity to speak up.

Regardless of whether you are nervous, shy and quiet or if English isn't your first language, step number one is C.

Now, when we're talking about composing yourself, we're not talking about just breathing calmly right before the meeting.

Composing yourself is actually several steps before you even prepare for that meeting.

This is all about knowing your unique value.

What is the unique expertise, the unique experience, the unique insights that you bring to the table, and

also getting clear on the ideal version of you that you want to start showing up as at work.

If right now you find yourself showing up as someone who shrinks, who's afraid, who's scared to Speak up, who hesitates, who's afraid of judgment?

And you want to show up as someone who is a calm, confident leader, you need to know, what does that calm, confident leader version of you look like?

This is the very first step that I teach in our program, and

it is vital because it sets the foundation for how you're going to approach the way that you show up, the way that you speak, the way that you carry yourself every single day.

Most of us, myself included, we were raised with the idea that you need to keep your head down, work hard, and

my cultural background where my parents were from is non Western.

And so I was raised with specific values and a certain mindset where you had to be humble, you had to lay low, you had to not speak out of line, and

you had to respect your elders and respect hierarchy.

And this translated to me not knowing how to communicate at work in early on in my career because I was showing up as less than I did not know how to communicate my value.

I did not know how to speak up in front of senior leaders because I was taught that in front of elders, you stayed quiet, you were humble, you laid low, you don't rock the boat.

And what I've since learned, helping thousands of professionals to advance in their careers, is hard work only gets you so far.

What's going to get you to that next level, that next goal that you want in your career, is your ability to communicate, is your ability to speak up.

And that comes from knowing first of all at the core level that you are a leader, knowing that you have what it takes and knowing what that version of you looks like.

Because if you don't believe that you're a leader, if you don't believe that you have what it takes, if you don't acknowledge all the unique expertise, experiences, the qualities about you that make you that strong, confident leader, if you don't acknowledge that about yourself, you're never going to show up as that.

You're always going to show up as someone who's uncertain, insecure, anxious and nervous when it comes to speaking up.

And that is not going to help you to get promoted it to the next level.

So I want you to take a moment and ask yourself these questions.

Who is the confident, calm, trusted leader you want to become?

What does he or she look like, sound like, feel like when he or she enters a room or shares an idea?

And in our program, I get my clients to write out in detail what this version of themselves Looks like once you gain clarity on that ideal version of yourself, you then have something to work with.

You then have the ability to move towards that ideal version, becoming embodying that ideal version and showing up as that calm, confident, trusted leader in your career.

And it helps that once you're able to write out this ideal version of yourself that you can then print it out, post it on a wall in your home, in your room, so that you can remind yourself on a daily basis who you are becoming.

And that will help you to set the tone every single time you walk into the office or show up for a meeting as to how you want to be.

And this is just like my client who once she started to embrace her ideal version of herself as a calm, confident, trusted leader, project management, she started showing up differently in meetings, leading meetings with senior executives, and

now has gained increased visibility in her organization.

that is L, which stands for lean in and participate in meetings with confidence.

This is where you move from being a fly on the wall to an active, visible contributor in the meeting.

And don't confuse this with the idea of having to be the loudest or the fastest thinker in the room.

This is not about pretending to be someone that you're not.

When it comes to leaning in and participating in meetings, it really comes down to the key communication strategies and frameworks that you need to understand when it comes to speaking up.

In other words, we're talking about structure.

Inside our program, I share several key frameworks that will help you to share your ideas more clearly, even when you're in an impromptu conversation and your mind goes blank or you're feeling anxious.

So for example, let's say you're in a meeting and you know that you have to share an update as to how you been doing with your project.

Kind of similar to how you would tell a story in an interview when you're talking about a progress update in a work meeting, it's similar where you would use the structure S A R that stands for Situation, action and result.

Give some context to what you're about to say.

Don't just jump into the final result, oh, I did the project, it's done.

You want to talk a little bit about the project?

What has your, your role been on this project?

You essentially want to get everyone on the same page and they understand the situation.

Then from there you're going to talk about all the actions that you did.

You're not going to get into full detail, but

give them a high level overview as to what steps you took to get to eventually your R, which is the end result.

That you were able to complete that project or assignment within the deadline, or that you were able to the deal with that particular client, or that you were able to work with that vendor on getting a new price agreed upon.

Whatever the final result is, you want to work your story to that point.

Don't just give the end result and say that that's the update, because then people won't understand what you actually did.

You're not showcasing your value, you're not expressing how good you are at what you do because all you're doing is just saying one line that, okay, that thing that you want me to do, it's done.

And people don't understand how you got to where you got to.

And they also don't really get a glimpse into your thought process and your work ethic.

So if you're going to give a progress update, use the SAR framework as one example of how to articulate this.

If you want to share an idea or an opinion in the middle of a meeting as people are talking.

And that framework is called or O A R R O stands for observation.

So you can say something like what I'm observing is.

And then from there A stands for analysis based on what you're observing, what does it imply?

And then we move on to R, which is recommend.
