Even though I'm not literally real, lately, work is making me feel exhausted, like just completely wiped out emotionally.

I'm also finding it really hard to find motivation to make this stuff.

And when I do, I don't even think it's any good.

It turns out that all of these are symptoms of burnout.

Emotional exhaustion, feeling negative or distant, and reduced performance.

Well, I call it the work ouchies, but yeah.

Burnout is a type of chronic work related stress.

It's primarily the result of poor management where employees are treated unfairly, are overloaded with work, have short deadlines or poor communication with their boss.

This can cause a lot of negative feelings such as being emotionally drained, unable to cope, frustration, numbness, negativity, unable to concentrate, and

in 2019, the World Health Organization classified it as an occupational phenomenon and studies have shown that it can negatively affect your physical and mental health.

In 2017, a study was published that reviewed the results of 36 previous studies that evaluated the effects of burnout on workers.

Overall, the researchers found out that burnout was a significant predictor of high blood cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, insomnia and symptoms of depression.

A 2018 survey of over 7,500 full time employees found that 67% felt burnout at least some sometimes, with 23% feeling it very often or always.

it's particularly prevalent in those who work in helping professions like doctors, nurses, social workers and counselors.

For instance, over half the physicians in the US have reported symptoms of burnout.

And in 2019, a report by Harvard and Massachusetts medical organizations declared physician burnout a public health crisis.

The following year, a study found that surgical residents who had symptoms of burnout were also more likely to have suicidal thoughts.

And since burnout reduces workers performance, it not only threatens the doctor's mental health, but

also their patients well being due to an increase in medical errors.

You can address the issue head on by speaking with your boss about what's causing the burnout.

Whether it be unrealistic deadlines or not having a clear channel of communication, they may be able to help you eliminate some stressors.

And if you're your own boss like most content creators are, try and pinpoint those stressors by writing down your workflow, seeing where you can make time for yourself, and

This can come from friends, family, coworkers or a therapist who can help you gain a perspective and find new ways to cope with your stress.

You should make your well being a priority by taking breaks, eating well, getting enough sleep and exercising.

Work can be stressful even when you're in animation and you love what you do, but

your mental health is more important than than anything.

I know this is all easier said than done.

Demanding jobs won't magically get less demanding, but

learning to say no, accepting help from others, creating pockets of relaxing time away from work, and

speaking to a professional can all help reduce burnout and help you recharge.

It's not taking a few steps back, it's just taking a step to the side so you don't get run over by the burnout truck.
