Hey guys today, we're in Shinjuku in the heart of Tokyo one of the busiest districts of one of the busiest cities in the world Shinjuku is filled with neon lights sky-high buildings hotels and upscale restaurants This is one of the first stops everyone makes on their first trip to Japan Hey everyone.

I'm at Shinjuku's Takashimaya, which is a department store Directly connected to Shinjuku station, and I'm on the 13th floor where they have this gorgeous garden terrace And you can see the whole city for a lot of people who come to Japan for the first time Tokyo is their first stop their first entryway into Japan and it can be a little bit overwhelming because there's so much to do here.

There's so much to see there's so much to experience and One of the things that I think a lot of people Might have a little difficulty with is finding the right things to eat So today at Takashimaya since they have over 30 restaurants here in the department store we're gonna pick five places to introduce to you today with different Japanese foods that you can try and Order for yourself when you make your trip to Japan at Takashimaya Times Square restaurant park There are over 30 restaurants spread out among two floors Showcasing some of the finest in Japanese cuisine if you're looking for an English friendly upscale Japanese dining experience to mark a special occasion Date night or you just want to treat yourself.

The restaurant floor offers amazing meals while overlooking the Shinjuku district Our first stop is Akasaka Fukinuki a restaurant that specializes in one of Japan's most beloved traditional meals Unagi or broiled eel once upon a time eel was plentiful in Japan But as the population has decreased this meal is now considered a special occasion Delicacy and the unique flavor is quite difficult to replicate outside of Japan Eating unagi or eel is something that I really recommend.

It is something that you can't have anywhere else.

It's a rare delicacy It's not something that people can afford to have every day as unagi is quite expensive these days But they say that it's really good for fighting summer fatigue.

If you feel tired during the summer, it's good for energy I'm gonna order hitsumabushi, which is eaten a very particular way and I'll show you how to eat it right now Hitsumabushi allows you to discover the joy of eating unagi by breaking it down into three steps The first is to enjoy the broiled eel over rice as is so you can familiarize yourself with the flavors and textures Eel itself isn't too fishy and the broiled sauce is sweet and salty We've got dried seaweed green onion Wasabi adding the seaweed as a flavoring on top gives it more of a sea salty Taste really interesting how the flavor of the unagi kind of takes to the seasonings Finally for step three What we're gonna do is we're gonna add some dashi and we're gonna make a eel Porridge by pouring the hot dashi over the rice and we've added wasabi green onion and seaweed on top as well This is definitely one of my favorite ways to enjoy unagi And the fact that you can enjoy this dish three ways makes it versatile and exciting every time you try it Once you've tried the unagi all three ways You can finish your meal, however, you'd like using the flavorings on your tray to customize it to your own tastes The next food I want to introduce to you is sukiyaki the quintessential Japanese food Sukiyaki is a Japanese style sweet and salty hot pot filled with veggies and served with strips of Japanese beef Dipped in raw egg, but don't worry If you're not comfortable eating raw egg, you can ask to replace the egg with dipping sauce instead At Takashimaya they use high-grade slices of domestic wagyu and serve you a carefully crafted course From Tottori Prefecture, Kuro Wagyu, the good stuff, the good stuff, and it's been dipped in raw egg Here we go, itadakimasu Mmm The beef is super good quality and it just melts, it just falls apart It's falling apart even in my chopsticks as I try to lift it up here Sukiyaki soup is a sugary soy, so it's sweet, but it's also salty and the egg makes it really creamy.

It's delicious The good thing about eating here in Takashimaya is you actually don't have to know how to eat sukiyaki because the staff will prepare it right in front of you Serving by serving, as more ingredients are added to the soup base, the umami, dense flavoring, can be detected in each bite This pairs amazingly with Japanese sake, which of course is also on the menu Oh wow And it's very easy to drink, very smooth going down, very sweet, has a very like floral, fruity aftertaste This is really nice Sukiyaki is so much fun, especially here because course by course by course, it just keeps evolving And now finally for the final course of the meal We have scrambled egg in the sukiyaki sauce, topped with fukinoto, which is a spring vegetable And it's just like the perfect way to end a perfect meal.

This is great And what trip to Japan is complete without a trip to a sushi bar?

Freshly pressed sushi enjoyed at the counter of a real Japanese sushi restaurant is one of my personal top recommendations for dining in Japan So we've got squid, tuna, and salmon, and these are so cute.

They're shaped like roses This is squid, ika, and ika can be a little bit of a tricky fish if you're not really used to sushi because of its hard, chewy texture But I love ika as long as it's fresh because fresh ika always has a chewy consistency But a nice kind of delicate sweetness to it So if you're gonna try ika for the first time, make sure that you try it somewhere where you're having it absolutely as fresh as can be Because that's where you're gonna get the best quality and the best flavor So this restaurant here is actually said to have been the founder of temaki sushi They invented temaki sushi and now you can find temaki sushi at sushi restaurants all across Japan.

So that's pretty cool So if you want to have it right, you want to have it the way that they intended it, you gotta eat it here Here we go A little bit of soy sauce on top Okay Nice service.

So this is zuke maguro This is maguro that has already been marinated in a soy sauce.

So it has flavor You don't need to put it into soy sauce or season it with wasabi And it's got yuzu on top and a white wasabi.

You just have to eat it as is Ordering sushi in Japan can be a little bit intimidating because it's a lot different than what we're used to in the West But this restaurant is English friendly.

Thank you For a light easy to digest meal that contains all of the exciting elements of a traditional Japanese dining experience But doesn't have any overbearing flavors.

One of my favorite foods to eat is soba Japanese style buckwheat noodles Here at Komatsu and that experience is elevated by its atmosphere This is probably my favorite interior and my favorite window side view that I've seen at Takashimaya The menu is in English It's very easy to understand and for what you get the prices are very reasonable as well And for those who want a full and satisfying meal ordering a course ensures you get all the embellishments of a fine dining experience With carefully crafted appetizers and unique menu items that amplify the delicate raw flavor of each ingredient We have a Kalbonara Pasta made with buckwheat noodles.

So it's soba noodles They're very thick and then we also have a side of soba bread, which is also made from buckwheat So it's completely all soba based With a creative menu that fuses modern-day dishes with Japanese style ingredients Each course brings something new and exciting to the table The Wagyu is drizzled with a kaishi sauce of tamari, mirin, and sugar and served with a wine Carefully paired to bring out the best of the Japanese flavors Next comes the common companion to any soba meal a mixture of seasonal vegetable tempura Served with some large shrimp.

The main dish is juwari soba The purest buckwheat soba you can get which gives the noodles an earthy chewy texture.

To enjoy Japanese soba Mix some onion and wasabi into your dipping sauce and flavor it to your liking Then dip the noodles in and enjoy It's as simple as that.

To finish off your meal pour soba water into your dipping sauce and make a savory soup It's a perfect way to end a meal By the way, if you get the chance to try their soba ice cream, I totally recommend it Finally for something a little different we're heading to the Japanese Western style hamburger restaurant Tsubame Grill for some comfort food So now we're at Tsubame Grill on the 13th floor and this place specializes in hamburger and while hamburger Isn't uniquely Japanese in itself.

Sometimes when we're traveling and we're introducing ourselves to a lot of different foods at once We find ourselves really craving stuff that we can get back home.

And so when you want to have dinner out But you're not looking for anything too different That's when a restaurant like this can come in handy.

Fantastic Look at it Look at how tender This meat just falls apart today.
