“I think sleeping was my problem in school. If school had started at four in the afternoon, I’d be a college graduate today.” — George Foreman, Former Professional Boxer

Hello Voicetubers, as I’m typing this, I’m already falling asleep. I recently got my third vaccine shot so I’ve been feeling really fatigued. Fatigued means tired. Oh, how forgetful of me! I forgot to introduce myself to those new to the Pronunciation Challenge! Hello everyone, my name is Hugh, and today, we’ll be talking about whether sleeping early or late is in our genes! Do you mean to say that the reason I’ve been sleeping late is because my body is naturally made to sleep late? I always felt that no matter how much sleep I got, I’ll always still feel sleepy. I also work both sides of the globe so I’m pretty much on-call 24 hours a day. If your body is wired to sleep according to the times that are convenient for society, then you may feel fully rested most of the time! Let’s get to the featured sentence before I reveal what late sleepers are at risk of!

Today’s featured sentence:
Researchers who study families of extreme early-risers show that many of them share the same mutation on one of these clock genes, and studies have found similar mutations in hamsters with early chronotypes.

I’ll say that again.

Researchers who study families of extreme early-risers show that many of them share the same mutation on one of these clock genes, and studies have found similar mutations in hamsters with early chronotypes.

Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.

For the first word, we have
mutation
Three syllables.
“MU” has a long U sound. “TA” has a long A sound and “TION” has your typical “T I O N” sound.

Next up, we have
genes
One syllable
I’m picking this one because a lot of my students tend to have issues with the E sound. For this word, make sure to just say the letter E and stretch it out. Genes.

Lastly, we have,
chronotypes
Three syllables.
With “CHRO”, ignore the H here. “NO” like yes and no. “TYPES” has a long i sound. It also has the same sound as type, like typing on the keyboard. Chronotypes.

Moving onto Vocabulary!

The first word is:
1. extreme
Definition
very large in amount or degree
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I’ve always wanted to try an extreme sport like hang-gliding.”

Next word,
2. mutation
Definition
the way in which genes change and produce permanent differences
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“Radiation can cause a mutation in your DNA.”

And lastly,
3. gene
Definition:
a part of the DNA in a cell that controls the physical development, behaviour, etc. of an individual plant or animal and is passed on from its parents
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“There is a specific gene in your DNA that decides what colour eyes you have.”

Smoking and depression! These are the two things most late sleepers are most likely to do and to have! Is it true? Maybe, maybe not, I won’t say! Seriously though, it’s tough staying awake throughout the day for me so I drink lots and lots of coffee! I also try to take naps here and there. Many years ago, when I had a regular 9-5 job, I would sneak into the bathroom and sit on the toilet just to sleep for 10 minutes. After a while, I realized that a 9-5 job wasn’t for me and I went to acting school. Fast forward many years and here I am teaching you listeners how to pronounce English words! I love it!

Find what works for you. If you are a late sleeper like me then perhaps you can look for a career that has flexible hours or something in which you can set your own hours. There’s always a way!

Alright everyone, it’s time to wrap this up. Get your recordings in if you haven’t done so already and give your boy a follow on Instagram at hughtran_. I’ll see everyone in the next episode, ok? Bye!
