“Live long and prosper” - Leonard Nimoy
Hey everyone! In case you forgot, this is Hubert with the Pronunciation Challenge. Today, I have a very interesting video. What’s the average age of where you listeners are located? I know that in Taiwan, as of Feb. 23, 2021, the life expectancy is 80.94 years. This would be something called chronological age which is the age according to the calendar. However, I’m sure we all know somebody who may be older but they look and are as healthy as someone 10 years their junior! (Means 10 years younger). The same goes for the opposite whereas someone may be young in chronological age but their bodies function (the way something works) like someone a lot older. That is because there is also something called biological age which takes into consideration other factors like your diet, pollution, disease, etc.! All these factors change the way our cells are damaged and repaired. What if we could change how our cells are repaired? That could change everything! Watch the video to find out more and stay tuned so I can share some tips on how I fight off father time!
Today’s featured sentence:
“Biological age describes the accumulated damage to your cells caused by genetics and factors like pollution, disease, and chronic lack of sleep, as well as the natural decline of cells over time.”
I’ll say that again.
“Biological age describes the accumulated damage to your cells caused by genetics and factors like pollution, disease, and chronic lack of sleep, as well as the natural decline of cells over time.”
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
Accumulate
Four syllables.
“A” sounds like “uh” when you don’t know what to say. “CCU” sounds like the letter “Q”. “Muh” has the short “U” sound with an “M” in front and “LATE” is exactly how it sounds. “LATE” like when you’re late for a meeting.
Next word.
Genetics
Three syllables
“Ge” has the short “U” sound with a “J” sound in front. “Ne” has the short “E” sound and “Tics” sounds like the insect, “Tick”.
And our last one would be,
Chronic
Two syllables.
“Chr” sounds like “K R A, KRA” and “Nic” sounds like the name “Nick”. Easy peezy. Just the spelling can throw you off with this one.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. Accumulate
Definition
to collect a large number of things over a long period of time
Used in a sentence you could say,
“Procrastinators usually let tasks accumulate over time and then try and finish it all at the very last moment.”
Next word,
2. Genetics
Definition
the study of how, in all living things, the characteristics and qualities of parents are given to their children by their genes
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I am going to medical school to study genetics.”
And lastly,
3. Chronic
Definition:
(especially of a disease or something bad) continuing for a long time
Used in a sentence you can say:
“I had to bring my mother to the doctors for her chronic knee issue.”
We’ve come a long way with modern technology. During the Roman Empire, life expectancy was only 25 years! Can you imagine a society where the life expectancy is 100 or even 150?! That would change everything. Have you guys ever heard of the show Love Death + Robots? There’s an episode about the consequences of immortal life. It’s a good episode and I think you should check it out after watching today’s video.
Alright, so as promised, what are my tips for beating father time? It’s nothing that you haven’t heard already. Eat well, sleep well, and be happy! Happy doesn’t mean indulging in vices which means immoral or wicked (bad) behaviour. It could be doing something you enjoy that happens to help other people like being a carpenter! There are many definitions of happiness and I wouldn’t know how to tell you to be happy but I’m sure you’ll figure it out! Stress does a number on your body as well so I took up meditation. I’m no doctor but in my opinion, I’d say stress is a big factor in aging someone both physically and mentally (not in a good way).
Ok, that about does it for my newest episode on the Pronunciation Challenge. I recently made a username change on instagram so if you want to follow me, my new tag is hughtran_. Again, that’s hughtran_. Thanks for listening and see you again on my next episode! Bye!
