  • Hi this is Joelle Meijer.

  • I will show you make a small Chinese lantern.

  • For this project, you will mainly need a clear plastic container,

  • red tissue paper and mod podge.

  • As there is a hole in the bottom of my container,

  • I have to block the hole with a piece of construction paper.

  • Cut a slice of the toilet paper roll of about 1 inch.

  • Put white glue on the edge of the slice of toilet paper roll

  • and glue it to the piece of construction paper.

  • Glue them on the bottom of the plastic container with the glue gun.

  • Obviously, if your plastic container does not have a hole,

  • simply glue the slice of toilet paper roll on the bottom of the plastic container.

  • Take the red tissue paper and tear it into strips.

  • Brush the plastic container with Mod Podge

  • and cover it completely with red tissue paper.

  • The colour red is the colour of the fire and symbolizes good fortune and joy.

  • Red is found everywhere during Chinese New Year celebrations

  • and other festivities and family gatherings.

  • When you have covered the entire bottom part of the plastic container,

  • do the same with the lid of the container. Let dry completely.

  • Take a golden metallic wire and cut a piece long enough to create

  • a handle for the lantern.

  • Take the lid of the plastic container and with a pair of small sharp scissors,

  • cut a small hole on either side of the lid.

  • Take a piece of wire and bend one end and pass it through one of the holes in the lid.

  • Then, bend the other end and insert it in the other hole.

  • Take a piece of narrow tube about 1 inch high and paint it with gold paint.

  • When the paint is dry, take some ribbon with golden fringes

  • and wrap it around the cardboard tube. Glue the ribbon with the glue gun.

  • Then glue the tube to the bottom of the lantern with the glue gun.

  • Take a small LED candle; turn it on and place it in the cardboard ring

  • on the bottom of the lantern. Then put the lid of the plastic container back in place

  • to obtain the complete lantern.

  • To finish the decoration, you can add a golden ribbon around the lantern.

  • If you wish, you can even paint the symbol of the year on one side of the lantern

  • with gold paint. This year is the year of the horse

  • and I chose to paint the Chinese symbol of the horse.
