  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 171. The proverb today is " when

  • the going gets tough, the tough get going. " Okay. Let's take a look at the note here.

  • The proverb basically means when times are difficult or when one is in a

  • difficult situation, the toughest people or the people with the strongest will

  • and determination are the ones that will try harder and never give up. Okay. Let's

  • continue. In this proverb, there are two different meanings for both the

  • words going and tough. The first going refers to the times or situation. So when

  • the going ... when this situation... when the situation is this way. When the going.

  • So it's a situation. The second going refers to moving into action. So when the

  • going gets tough. When those when the times are tough, the tough get going. The

  • tough move into action. They do things. All right and then the word tough here. The

  • first stuff refers also to difficult times. When the going gets tough. When

  • things in your life get difficult. The tough get going you know, but here the

  • tough meaning people that are tough. People that are durable So the second

  • meaning means durable or able to bear discomfort. They're not an easy pushover.

  • They're not a person that gives up easily. So the tough get going. Again the

  • tough move into action. Okay. Let's continue. There are two possible origins

  • of this proverb. Some say it was a quote by Joseph P Kennedy the father of the

  • President John F Kennedy who was a businessman and investor. Okay. Or the

  • second possible origin comes from the football coach John Thomas. John

  • who managed the Green Hornet's you know, football team.

  • Okay. The quote was dated to September 1953 and reported in the newspaper "The

  • Corpus Christi Caller. Okay. So we actually do have a date on this one. The other one

  • where not sure the date. But it's but a lot of people said that that that

  • Kennedy's father had said it. The proverb was popularized more in the

  • 1980s due to a song by Billy ocean. And the video was from the movie "The Jewel

  • of the Nile. " A very popular movie in the 1980s. Both the actor Michael Douglas and

  • the actress Kathleen Turner were both young. Michael Douglas was very handsome

  • Kathleen Turner was young and she was very attractive at that time. And of

  • course that movie was very, very popular. And then that was the time when

  • music videos were very ,very popular on MTV. So that video got to be shown a lot

  • and you know, it was a song people got to hear that

  • That proverb repeated over and over again. Okay. Let's continue and we have

  • just a couple of examples John Thomas you know, the coach we just talked about

  • before. So when the going gets tough the tough get going as a way to encourage

  • players. Or you know, he said that in his speeches you know, to you know to prove

  • you know, this is this is what you need. So it's so today it could still be used

  • in sports too Like by coaches trying to stimulate or encourage their players to

  • try harder. Okay and we could also say number two here. The proverb you know,

  • when the going gets tough the tough get going is often used in business training

  • seminars. Here especially for salespeople or managers or something like that. Okay.

  • Anyway, I hope you got it hope you found it informative. Thank you for your time.

  • Bye-bye.
