  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 118. The noun phrase today is beauty

  • sleep. Okay. Let's take a look at the note. Beauty sleep is usually used in a

  • humorous way. So what we usually are trying to make a joke when we use it , to refer

  • to sleep that is necessary to help one look refreshed and attractive. Some say

  • beauty sleep also implies going to bed before midnight. Yeah. Because if you

  • start going to three four o'clock in the morning you may not look so fresh in the

  • morning. It tends to be used mostly with women or

  • in regard to women. Yeah. Men don't usually say I need my beauty sleep

  • unless they're really joking. But they might use it with women you know, or

  • about women. It also alludes to the idea that if you lose too much sleep you may

  • look worn out and possibly get you know, black circles around one's eyes. And then

  • of course you would not look very refreshed that way.

  • Some say the first citing may be from a Shakespeare poem called "Lucrece" or

  • Lucrece something like that. Here is the quote. " Here in her sleepe

  • themselves so beautiful. " And then it pretty much kind of turned into what we use

  • today of beauty sleep. Okay. And by the 1800s it was a very common phrase. So

  • there's a lot of stories that are written in the 1800s that you know, you

  • could find a citing of this phrase previously. Okay. Good and we just have

  • two examples here. If I don't get enough beauty sleep, I will look terrible in the

  • morning. So maybe, maybe a woman might be saying that. Or number two. You had better

  • go to bed now if you want to look good in the morning or you know if you want

  • to look good for your interview tomorrow or something like that. You need your

  • beauty sleep. Okay. And again we usually use it in a joking way. Okay. I hope you

  • got it. I hope it was clear. Thank you for your time. Bye=bye.
