Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 231. The idiom today is to be like
a deer caught in the headlights. Okay. So if you've ever if you've ever driven
anywhere where there is actually deer on the side of the road, you understand this
idiom perfectly. Because this is just what it's like.
So the headlights of course are the headlights on a car. And if you are
driving by and a deer sees you they actually freeze. There's that huh. They
just stand there like that. You know most other animals will run.
They run as fast as they can one way or the other. But a deer is different. A deer
is like totally confused and it's a big animal so you got to be very careful. You
don't want to hit a deer. One you feel sorry for the deer. You don't want to
hurt any animal, but a deer is such a big animal but you know, it could be
dangerous even to you. You could damage your car very seriously. So you don't
want to do it. So if they're in the middle of the road
usually it's up to the driver to either stop or go around the deer because the
deer gets frozen in fear. They just stand there almost like they can't believe
like oh my god what is that ? Even though you think they should be used to it.
Because you know, the same deer probably crossed the roads but they always look
like it was the first time they've ever seen headlights. So that's what we say so
we say that somebody might look like a deer caught in the headlights. Okay. Let's
uh let's continue here. Let's look at the note. So if someone is like a deer caught
in the headlights, he or she is frozen in fear. That's what we mean. All right. So
let's look at a couple of examples here. When James claimed to see a UFO, he said he
felt like a deer caught in the headlights. Yeah. So for a deer it might
almost be the same way. It's almost like a person seeing one of those spaceships
coming down and just being frozen and not being able to move and
not knowing what to do. So okay good. Let's look at the second one.
When Sally caught her daughter with her hands in the cookie jar. Yes. The
expression on her daughter's face was like a deer caught in the headlights. So
the mother must have caught the daughter red-handed like she knew she was doing
something wrong. She was putting her hands into the cookie jar and she got
caught and turns around like.. Oh you're. that's supposed to be here. All right. So
that's what we mean. So, so we use this anytime we say somebody looks like you
they have an expression that they're frozen in fear. Yeah. So they look like a
deer caught in the headlights. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for
your time. Bye-bye.
