  • Well, one of my hardest days as an optometrist came about five or six years ago when we saw

  • a patient in the office who wasn't seeing so well and the patient had assumed that it

  • was because his contact lens didn't have the right prescription and so he'd come in to

  • try to get that addressed. Through the course of the exam things just didn't seem to match

  • up. We got to a point where we looked into the back of the patient's eye and we found

  • a cancerous tumor in the back of their eye. That was very tough to explain to the patient

  • why they weren't seeing well and what the nature of the problem was. And just to have

  • them then be seen by other doctors and see how that patient's life evolved over time.

  • Fortunately, it turned out to be a really, really great story. But at that moment that

  • was probably, and even to this day that was probably the most gut wrenching day as an

  • optometrist.
