Relative clauses (Restrictive vs. nonrestrictive)

Well, this is going to be a super homophone lesson because we have several words that are spelled differently but are pronounced the same way.

We have duck, the animal; duct, which is a tube or a pipe that carries air or liquid;

duct, which means you are going to get out of the way so that you aren't hit by something;

duct tape; and duct tape, which is the type of tape, DUCT tape;

and a brand name of this type of tape, DUCK tape.

So to say the word "duck" correctly, just three little sounds: D-U-C-K.

And for that K sound, tip of the tongue is low, back of the tongue is high up: duck.

Now, for duct and duct, we are going to end with that T sound.

So we have duck, and then we add the T: duct.

Now, the reason we typically say duct tape is because we use linking,

and when we link words together, meaning that we combine them without a pause between them, we make it a little bit easier,

and we are only going to say a sound once if the first word ends in that sound and the next word begins in the same sound.

And we have that situation here because we have duct ends with a T,

We are going to only pronounce one T, and we are going to say duct tape.

Don't forget, when we have compound words and it's a noun, we stress word one and we unstress word two.

So you can see this is kind of a clever naming strategy for the brand DUCT tape because we do say duck instead of duct.

It helps me smile as I am repairing the broken duct.
