"Morphine" by Michael Jackson is one of the most personal and underrated songs in his catalog.

After the intervention of his friend, Elizabeth Taylor, Michael checked in to a detox clinic in London.

I traveled to Mexico City, where I saw for myself that Michael was in desperate need of specialized medical attention.

Because of my own experience with addiction to prescription medicines, I was able to make a number of calls in search of the best and most appropriate treatment for Michael,

and he is now undergoing such treatment in Europe.

My friends and doctors advised me to seek professional guidance immediately in order to eliminate what has become an addiction.

It is time for me to acknowledge my need for treatment in order to regain my health.

I realize that completing the tour is no longer possible, and I must cancel the remaining dates.

I know I can overcome the problem, and will be stronger from the experience.

The song "Morphine" originated from this difficult period.

Michael dedicated his whole body and soul to this track as he wanted it to reflect his feelings as truthfully as possible.

Apart from singing, Michael arranged the song and played several instruments, most notably drums.

It was a talent many of his fans knew he had,

but it was the first time he performed drums on a song he was planning to release.

Michael asked Slash to record the guitar parts and played along with him.

Michael called on his frequent collaborators to help bring his vision fully to life.

Bill Bottrell and Brad Buxer helped develop the soundscape for this ambitious song.

You can sense real anger and frustration in Jackson's vocals that are accompanied by the hard-hitting drums and relentless funky crashing of the guitar.

Jackson samples audio from David Lynch's 1980 film, "The Elephant Man." He used the scene from the film where the nurse asks whether Merrick listened to the doctor's advice.

The highlight of "Morphine" comes during the bridge.

Designed as a breather, it acts as a moment where the song's hero finds himself face-to-face with deceptive and liberating relaxing effects of the drug Demerol.

Brad Buxer's piano arpeggios highlight Michael's composed vocals as he sings and describes how the Demerol manages to soothe him for a while.

You know, like with "Morphine," I remember Michael says, "Come up with a piano part." Imagine we're in an operating room, right?

And he says, "Come up with a classical piano part." So I came up with the classical piano part, which is really easy to do.

And basically, Michael's singing about Demerol, right?

And I didn't really care because Michael was alert and functioning beautifully and clear,

So, you know, just figuring it's one of his things.

You know the lyrics in "Morphine." With the help of the Synclavier synthesizer, which was also used for the intro of "Beat It," Andrew Schepp recreates the ambiance of a hospital room, imitating respiratory machines.

The orchestra led by Jorge Del Barrio was recorded at the Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles.

All 44 musicians worked hard to create a part that was both melodramatic and solemn, as if to represent the fragility of a man faced with his addiction.

The bridge suddenly ends, symbolizing the addict returning to harsh reality,

and the song comes back to hard-hitting verses.

Michael Jackson wanted to release "Morphine" as a single,

but his record label didn't allow it, stating it wasn't appropriate for the wider public.

He rehearsed it repeatedly throughout the History tour but never performed it on stage.

The song also created a controversy in some regions, like in Malaysia, which changed the song's title to "Just Say No" and South Korea censoring the song altogether.

This song, which has largely been forgotten by the public, is a striking and disturbing portrait of a star dropping all of the façade and being extremely honest with the listeners.

Totally ignored, even shunned upon its release, it was rediscovered and reevaluated by journalists after Michael's tragic death on June 25, 2009.
