Some exhibitions I've had where there's been one sculpture that's protected from humidity with resin, and

I never expected people to eat the sculpture.

I just thought it would be nice for them to see it, but

You don't know who's licked there before?

Like, what are you doing?" Like, nobody was afraid of that.

I just love the look on people's faces when they understand it's sugar, because most people don't actually know.

And then when they hear that it's sugar, they go, "What?" And then they look at it again, and

I think that makes them feel more part of it when they know what it's made of.

Origami is the Japanese name for the art of folded paper, and

most origami is folded from a single sheet of paper with no cuts or tears.

But my study was science and engineering.

I worked for NASA doing research on lasers.

But throughout that whole time, I had been pursuing origami, developing designs, and writing books.

So in 2001, I quit my job to try to make a career out of origami.

I've worked on a couple of different folding patterns that were round and would wrap into a cylindrical geometry to fit into a rocket.

And I developed an airbag in a car that inflates from a small folded bundle.

So whenever an engineer creates something that opens and closes in a controlled way, they can make use of the folding patterns of origami.

Over the years, math has allowed me to realize, as an artist, shapes and creations that I couldn't achieve any other way.

Traditional origami was relatively simple.

The designs would have taken maybe 20 or 30 steps at most.

But today, origami pieces can be so complicated that they can have tens, hundreds, maybe even a thousand steps.

We both got into magic around the age of 12.

We would go to the library and check out books by Dia Vernon, Guy Hollingworth.

Just seeing the illustrations, we're like, "Wow, we can do this with playing cards." When we started practicing cardistry, it wasn't a thing.

It comes from card magicians who would use what is called the card flourish, and

these were used to accentuate certain moments in a magic trick.

We were the first to embrace it and really focus on it and practice it as its own thing and promote it as its own thing.

Cardistry is very much like skateboarding.

You know, we practice these tricks until we have them down perfect.

You know, we see other tricks and we're like, "Oh, we got to learn that." You have 52 playing cards, and

the possibilities to maneuver those around are endless.

You can hold a deck of cards in your hand, and it's one solid block.

Now imagine lifting up another block, so now you have two.

Well, what can you do with those two blocks in your hands?

Well, you can create more blocks, and we call those packets, and

you can start maneuvering and spinning and flipping those packets between your fingers.

And when you're truly a master of it, you can just start doing things on the fly, and

It just so happens that I live in a scrap metal paradise because every farmer and rancher in the area has a scrap metal pile of some kind.

People are very generous around here to invite me over and say, "You can look through our scrap pile." And so that's where I gather my materials for my sculptures.

So then I bring all this found objects home that I've handpicked, and

I start grabbing things and fitting them up there.

It's almost like a patchwork quilt, if you will.

And within all that chaos, when you step back, the animal comes to life, and
