I want to start off today by telling you about one of my favorite moments in the entirety of recorded music.

It happens in Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash's take on Girl from the north country from Dylan's 1969 album Nashville Skyline.

Now, I know there's a lot of people that prefer Dylan's solo version of the song from a few years earlier, and

that song is a masterpiece in its own right.

But the version with Cash has always held a special place in my heart.

It's one of those songs that'll just melt you.

The recording is so warm, tinged with melancholy and nostalgia.

Dylan's smooth croon and Cash's rasp tinged baritone transport you into this world of love and woe if you're traveling to the North Country Fair.

But the moment that really sends it over the top comes at the start of the second chorus.

After each taking a verse, Cash and Dylan join together for the chorus, and

halfway through this, Please say hello to the one who lives there.

This little error creates a brief but tangible moment of awkward dissonance.

It passes as fast as it comes on, with Dylan pulling back and deferring to the age and experience of Cash before the two fall in sync for the chorus again.

It's an undeniable mistake, but it's one that was deliberately left in the final recording, and

The strength of Girl from the north country isn't in clean polish, it's in raw authenticity.

The song feels like two old friends playing, playing a guitar and singing together in a cabin in the woods.

It's a wistful, playful energy that makes the piece feel removed from time, which is particularly impressive when you remember that it was recorded on the tumultuous backdrop of 1969.

I don't think it would have felt that way if it was perfect.

I think the slight awkwardness to the guitar, the slight dissonance in the vocals, and

especially that little lyrical stumble are the greatest strengths of the song.

I want to look at tiny errors that by accident or choice, are left in the final versions of songs.

And I want to explore how and why these choices make songs better.

Girl from the north country isn't the only notable mistake in Bob Dylan's expansive discography.

Another one of my favorites came a few years earlier, when Dylan was recording his seminal album Bringing It All Back Home, during an early take of Bob Dylan's 115th dream.

Dylan giggles off the top and the entire studio descends into a fit of laughter.

I was riding on the Mayflower when I thought I spied some lips.

The song then picks up with a proper take where the band joins in.

I was riding on the Mayflow and I thought I spot some land.

This is actually two different takes from two different days, so spliced together.

So the mistake isn't as organic as it might seem.

But the decision to include the earlier flubbed intro is absolutely the right one.

There's something so unguarded and real about Dylan's giggling.

It's a mask off moment from a performer who is famously cryptic.

It immediately puts you in this loose, light mind frame, preparing you for the surreal caper of a track that's about to follow.

I asked the captain what his name was and how come he didn't drive a truck.

The flubbed intro is one of the more common mistakes you'll see left in a song, because it's often quite easy to edit around.

One of the most well known examples is Green Day's Good Riddance.

Again, this flub gives a moment of raw realness, but

it also serves as a preemptive bit of comic relief before a song that's much heavier than Green Day's usual fare.

For me, there's a kind of earnesty in it too, as though Billie Joe Armstrong realizes that this song is important and is really trying to nail it.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right.

I hope you had the D. Not every mistaken intro needs a restart, though.

Sometimes artists will just play their way through the mistake and change the song in the process.

That's what the Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts did on Start Me up, where he clearly has trouble finding the one right off the top.

This mistake leads to a bit of a stilted intro, which immediately falls into place in immensely satisfying fashion before the verse starts.

Watts came from a background of jazz, so it's not really a surprise he played through the mistake.

Jazz has a long history of embracing mistakes and going with the flow.

In fact, Miles Davis would tell you that there's no such thing as a mistake.

He famously said, it's not the note you play that's the wrong note, it's the note you play afterwards that makes it right or wrong.

Herbie Hancock tells a story about one show in particular in Stuttgart, Germany, where he played a wrong chord and Davis changed his playing to Harmonize with Hancock's chord.

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, we don't know if there's a recording of that exact performance.

But we do have another infamous mistake from a jazz great in Germany.

During a 1960 performance of Mack the Knife in Berlin, Ella Fitzgerald fully forgets the lyrics to the song.

Unfazed, she trucks on and improvises her own verse about not knowing the song.

This is just absolutely charming and makes you fall even more in love with Ella Fitzgerald.

It underlines the fun, light energy of her music and really sends the performance home.

Forgotten and messed up lyrics are quite common in live recordings, but

they can also be found in plenty of studio recordings.

And in some occasions, these lyrical mistakes will actually change the meaning of the song.

The Beatles Obla di o bla da sings about domestic bliss between a couple named Desmond and Molly Jones.

But in the fourth verse, a lyrical mistake adds an odd little twist to the song.

This line was originally just a single singing mistake by McCartney, but

It adds a little bit of transgression and a little bit of weirdness to a song that otherwise is often considered one of the Beatles weaker tracks.

Sometimes things go even further, with lyrics being rewritten around mistakes.

That's the case with Iron Butterfly's Inegada de Vita.

Vocalist Doug Engel originally wrote the song after drinking a gallon of wine.

The song was supposed to be called in the Garden of Eden, but

when a wasted Ingle sang the lyrics to drummer Ron Bushy, he was completely unintelligible.

So Bushy wrote the lyrics down as the nonsensical Ina gadda de Vita, and it stuck.

This meaningless line gave the song a cryptic, vaguely occultic feeling.

And so Ingles drunken slurring helped the song become a key step in the development of heavy metal.

In a godda Peter hun, don't you know that I love you?

Some of the best mistakes come not from the musicians playing the songs, but

There are frankly too many songs to name, with giggles, curses and accidental ambience caught in the mix.

Most of these are just kind of interesting little Easter eggs to point out, but

there are some that I think genuinely improve the song.

While recording Roxanne Sting accidentally leaned on a piano, creating a rough, dissonant chord and and then bringing forth a peel of laughter from him.

I actually never realized this was a mistake until I was researching this video because I think it fits the song so well.

This dissonant chord falls close enough to the bas lick that it feels natural, and

the laughter adds a bit of manic, desperate energy that goes well with Sting's vocal performance on the song.

On Pink Floyd's Wish youh Were Here, David Gilmour can be heard coughing during the song's intro.

It's an incredibly small detail, but for me it's always underlined the ragged, weary energy of the song.
