The imperative

Homophones are words that are pronounced exactly the same way.

They just have different spellings and different meanings.

These words came up in class this week, and I was even surprised that they are homophones.

It's just one of those things that I didn't think about even though I pronounced them exactly the same way.

So we have unheeded, which means to ignore and not pay attention to, and

unheeded, which means we are not making it warm.

So to say these words correctly, let's look at the syllables we have unheeded.

So we are going to stress he, that middle syllable, he.

You're going to unstress the un, unhee, and then we're going to end in did.

Wait, you might be saying why when that is a letter t?

Well, it's because we have a flap T here, and

a flap T sounds like a very fast D sound.

We use this sound a lot in English, especially when we have two vowels with the t between them.

And so when we have this ed ending, most of the time, if the word ends in a T, we're going to say did to end that word.

So let's put this all together and give it a try.

Her warning to bring a coat went unheated.

She knew they were going to be entering an unheated room.
