A heteronym are words that are pronounced differently, but they are spelled the same.

So we have the word combat, which is a noun.

And combat means fighting or a battle, especially during a war.

And then we have combat, which is the verb.

And for the word combat, that means to fight against something, to try to stop it.

So we are going to focus on syllable stress.

A stressed syllable is louder, the vowel is longer, and it is higher in pitch.

That means the other syllables must be shorter, softer, and lower.

So to say these words correctly, the rule is typically the same.

We are going to stress syllable number one for the noun.

Now for combat, we are going to stress syllable number two, the bat.

Typically in unstressed syllables, we oftentimes reduce so much that we use the schwa sound and in this case sounds like a short U.
