Welcome back to the Fixed Ops Roundtable.

Also a special guest, Damon Egan, who is the service manager at Sherwood Ford in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada.

Ed and Damon, welcome back to the Fixed Ops Roundtable.

Damon, what brings you to Ed Roberts neck of the woods?

He's from Alberta, Canada and he just got done with the winter there and here we are in May and he, he wanted to finish that one out down here.

Damon, I know you oversee the day to day operations at Western Canada's largest Ford dealership and you're known as the, as the service fixer.

If it's okay, I'd like to ask you both some questions today because I think what you're both known for is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in automotive, especially in fixed operations.

So Ed, if it's okay, let me start with you a little bit.

We've got an acronym, Best team on the planet.

You've got a compelling story, you've had extraordinary growth and give us a little bit of the lay of the land.

And then Damon, I'm going to come to you for the same thing.

Well, we've certainly been blessed and the key to any great organizations having great people and we've built a foundation here to be able to grow our own people.

And so we have a pipeline, we work with the trade schools, we just donated some vehicles to them a couple months ago and we work with them to give us the foundational kids and then we take them and run them through our programs here, whether it's for a technician, for advisor, for a salesperson.

We ran them through our Bozard University and it really allows us to grow the people that we desire to carry out our brand.

And David, we're really trying to emulate what Ed and his team are doing here.

We know that there's a technician shortage.

It's not to the extent in Canada that it is in the US but we're really trying to grow our own technicians as well.

Taking from the local trade schools, running them through our program, getting them settled with a mentor, journeyman, technician in our shop and then eventually graduating them to become certified technicians.

And Damon, if you don't, if you don't mind, give us a little insight into your hiring in those training processes and the retention of your, of Your team members?

One is drive, and the other one is desire.

And just seeing Ed's operation here, he's looking for a lot of the same things in his people.

You know, we can teach technical aptitude, but you can't teach heart and integrity.

And those are two of the big things that we look for when we're hiring apprentices to come on board.

We have a very high retention factor, and people don't leave our place.

I think that's one thing that Ed and I have in common at our stores is that people don't want to leave.

We provide, you know, lots of help to people getting accustomed to their roles, and

we want to see them succeed so that they don't leave.

And, Damon, I know you've spent a couple days there now.

Yeah, it's been an enlightening opportunity.

You know, Ed and I have kind of gone back and forth as to, hey, hey, you know, I'd really like to come down.

And Ed's been gracious enough to say, hey, anytime you want to come down and check it out, please.

So we made it happen, you know, took a long time to get here, a lot of flights, but

You know, the way to surmise this is if anybody has heard Ed talk about his culture in the store and they think it's too good to be true, the answer is it is absolutely true.

I haven't met one person out of the entire week I've been here that hasn't said, this is home, this is family.

And that culture goes from the cleaners to the dealer principals, and it is everywhere.

Damon, what was your first impression when you got there a few days ago?

The first impression was, wow, it is so big.

It is such a big place, but it doesn't feel like it because everybody knows everybody.

I got the opportunity when I first got here to sit in, in a new higher orientation meeting.

And the general manager of the dealership came in, and you've got these new hires.

He said, my job is to make sure that I know your name.

And that was such a Strong statement that shows the commitment to the culture that everybody has from top down.

Like, what better feeling to have as a new hire when you're hearing the big boss say this?

It was just, we thought, you know, this is going to be such a great weekend.

It has been nothing short of remarkable this week.

Ed, underlying principles behind that best team on the planet.

Can you share some of that philosophy with us?

Well, and Damon has heard this all week long, that it starts from the top down.

And one of the things that we do well is we cascade our information all the way down from top to bottom.

And with doing that, then when we have a new hire orientation, like Damon spoke about a minute ago, I can go in and welcome those guys to the best team on the planet and then tell them that we expect their best because they are now part of the team.

And it's a segue to kind of set the foundational elements of what we do and how we get there.

And it also gives them a sense of pride, of being a part of what we consider to be the best part of the planet.

We give them a few things, bracelet, a few various different things to remind them that they are part of the best team on the planet, but

only happens with them giving us their best efforts, not coming in and just going along for the ride.

If they want to stay part of the best team on the planet, they got to give us their best as well.

Damon, I think one of the biggest things for us and the culture that we're trying to establish at our dealership is to really emulate exactly what Ed said.

You know, I'm not going to steal his tagline of be top or best team on planet, but

we're gonna do whatever we can to really emulate the culture here and really get the best out of our people.

I think that that's the best way to retain people and help them grow to where they.

And here we have the number one mobile dealer in the United States and number one in Canada, side by side.
