Critics, including the un, Britain and Arab states have condemned Israel's decision to expand its control in the occupied west bank, calling it a step towards annexation.

Israel's security cabinet agreed on Sunday to make it easier for Jewish settlers to buy land in the west bank and gave Israeli authorities more power to act in areas supposedly under full Palestinian control.

One of them was ultranationalist Finance Minister Betsal Al Smotrich, who, announcing the measures, said the government would continue to kill the idea of a Palestinian state.

On Monday, Britain and the UN joined leading Arab states in condemning the move.

And in Hebron, a West bank city with a significant settler population, Palestinians voiced anger at Israel's plans.

Issa Amer heads an organization called Youth Against Settlements.

He said it would now be easier for Israel to confiscate land and demolish Palestinian and this leads to the displacement of Palestinian citizens, the building of more settlements and the annexation of these areas to the occupying state.

Annexing the west bank has long been a priority of far right parties in the coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

US President Donald Trump said last year he would not allow Israel to carry it out.

The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the Israeli steps eroded the prospect of a two state solution.

This was his spokesperson, Stefan Dujarik.

Such actions, including Israel's continuing presence in the occupied Palestinian territory, are not only destabilizing but, as recalled by the International Court of Justice, unlawful.

Under the Oslo Interim peace Accords of 1993, the West bank was divided into Area A, under security control of the Palestinian Authority and Area B, under joint control with Israel.

Most of the west bank became Area C, under full Israeli security control.
