as part of an ode to 2006, we're counting down the most memorable video games that turned 20 this year too.

Now, for a franchise with the motto Gotta go fast, it's kind of amazing.

This was one of its very first true racing games.

Luckily, it revved up with plenty of style rather than a run of the mill mascot.

Think of them like a mix between a hoverboard and a skateboard.

They provided a surprisingly deep racing experience that prioritized tight turns and intense resource management.

Riders wasn't just a game, it was a whole aesthetic, one the franchise has been returning to as recently as 2025's Sonic Cross Worlds.

But enough of this friendly banter, Sonic.

You better make sure you're ready when we meet face to face once again.

Nicktoons battle for Volcano island that sounds like it wasn't me.

So what do you get when you cross spongebob squarepants, Danny Phantom and the Fairly Oddparents together?

While not the first time our favorite Nickelodeon characters crossed paths, and

far from the last, Volcano island was certainly one of the most memorable.

The plot is bonkers in the best way possible, and

the gameplay is admittedly janky, but the characters are what matter, and they're all in top form here.

Especially since most are voiced by their original actors.

Even decades later, the charm of seeing Nicktoons unite is just impossible to pass up.

Just listening to this title theme is enough to send us back to simpler times.

As the best selling and longest running Pokemon spin off, it's no surprise the original Mystery Dungeon installments are revered to this day.

They offered a distinctly different experience from those who just want to catch em all.

Here you were a Pokemon tasked with exploring randomly generated dungeons and engaging it in a surprisingly thoughtful story.

But if that wasn't your thing either, you couldn't go wrong drawing endless circles in Pokemon Ranger.

No matter what, 2006 was a good time to be a Pokemon fan.

A sequel to one of the greatest arena fighters of all time.

With all that, it's safe to say no gamer's collection was complete without Budokai Tenkaichi 2.

It had everything the first game did, but more of it.

More characters, more game modes, and more fun than ever before.

In fact, we'd go so far as saying that in all of gaming, few series personify the joy of smashing action figures together quite like Budokai Tenkaichi.

It's easy to see why, years later, Dragon Ball fans are still chasing the high of these games.

This fighting copies of yourself business is pretty weird.

How the heck did I get stuck with all this anyway?

While we're on the topic of arena fighters, we'd be remiss not to mention one of the biggest releases in fighting game history.

That's really no hyperbole here, as the conclusion of the original mortal Kombat story, Armageddon's ridiculous 62 character roster includes just about every single fighter that you could ever want.

But if that somehow isn't enough, there are two slots for player creator characters as well, and

you could even create your own fatalities.

There's really no way to overstate what an achievement that was back in 2006.

Heck, even by today's standards, Armageddon remains the gold standard for the series.

Number 15 lego star wars the original trilogy.

The galaxy far, far away has never been so much fun.

Whether it was collecting every item, unlocking its ginormous roster of characters, or just simply messing around in co op, lego Star Wars 2 was guaranteed to be a riot.

These days, most everyone buying a Lego game knows they're in for a delightful reinvention of their favorite series.

While this sequel definitely rode the hype of the first title, it's strange to consider the Lego games were still a sort of relatively unknown commodity back then.

That is, until the original trilogy proved the first one wasn't a fluke.

And neither was its sequel, for that matter.

As they say, third time's the charm although coming off two juggernaut releases, Call of Duty 3 is iconic.

On precedent alone, some may argue it didn't push the series forward, but

The same gripping first person action with some enhanced vehicular combat and environmental destruction thrown in, plus the sprawling narrative and refined gameplay laid the framework for what the series would become.

Much of what Call of Duty is today is actually owed to what the team learned on this game.

For something made on an extremely tight production schedule, that's pretty darn impressive.

Long before the MCU propelled the brand into the mainstream, Activision showed gamers what a real comic book crossover looked like.

Marvel ultimate alliance truly has everything a fan could want.

You can thwip around as Spider man, incinerate enemies as Johnny Storm, or shred through mobs as you embrace your inner Wolverine.

perfectly brought to life here, to say nothing of its lengthy, ambitious story mode.

Thanks to the success of a certain cinematic universe, ultimate alliance hasn't just aged well, it's arguably more fun today than it actually was at launch.

So if you haven't assembled these Avengers yet, here is your official call to action.

Nowadays, it's rightfully regarded as one of the greatest games ever made.
