Unlike your chronological age, which is the amount of time that's passed since your birth, your biological age is a measure of the age related changes that have occurred to your cells and organs.

These changes can happen faster or slower than average depending on your genes and lifestyle choice, like your diet and exercise habits.

Basically, your biological age can be used to get an idea of your health status.

This could help doctors better predict your risk for age related diseases and even find ways to prevent them.

Before we talk about reversing it, we need to figure out how we measure your biological age.

Scientists have developed tests that estimate your biological age by measuring age related DNA changes in your blood.

These tests are called epigenetic clocks and a number of them have been developed over the years, but

For instance, some older epigenetic clocks aren't sensitive enough to pick up on the biological changes that result from validated health interventions like caloric restriction.

But some, like Dunedin Pace, can actually show you how medical treatments and healthy choices have slowed down your rate of aging by taking the tests by before and after the intervention.

Some interventions have been even found to reverse your biological clock.

In a first of its kind randomized controlled trial, researchers from Columbia University showed that caloric restriction can slow the pace of aging in healthy adults.

Using the Dunedin Pace algorithm, they found that the calorie intervention slowed the pace of aging by 2 to 3% while which translates to a 10 to 15% reduction in mortality risk.

This is similar to the effects of stopping smoking, but

no other clocks were able to register a significant change.
