Men view their exes more favorably than women do.

This is one of the first extensive attempts to document how men and women differ in how they view exes.

Across three studies, we found that men hold more positive attitudes towards their female exes than women do towards their male exes.

Like, for example, like, I don't talk to Bob.

And if you did talk to Bob, I would respect that.

Women hold more negative attitudes towards their exes compared to men.

And though our research documents this difference, we don't necessarily know its origins, but we do have theories.

One possible theory is the perceived causes of breakups.

So women blame their male partners more often for breakups than men blame their female partners.

And more frequently report problematic partner behaviors as the reason for the breakup, like infidelity, substance abuse, mental or physical abuse.

Men, in contrast, are more likely to claim they don't know what caused their past breakups.

Another theory is the difference in coping after breakups.

So a meta analysis shows that women have active coping strategies, like seeking emotional support from friends.

Whereas men often cope via distraction by engaging in excessive work or sports, quickly entering rebound relationships, or using more drugs, alcohol.

So this difference in coping suggests that women may have greater closure and assurance that their ex wasn't good for them, while men experience greater ambivalence.

As a result of this coping strategy, men often remain emotionally attached longer, are less likely to believe that their ex partner was not right for them, and

are more likely to see their exes positively.

But my favorite theory out of all the research, Carl, is that men view their exes more favorably because in scientific terms, he want to tap that ass again, Cheryl.

Men rate sexual access as a reason for staying in touch with an ex.

It is possible that men do not want to close the door on sexual intimacy with their former partners completely.
