Foreign to learn three tips for breath support to sound clear and confident when you are speaking.

I'm Jennifer Tarle with Tarle Speech, and

I'm here to help you sound as confident and clear as possible when you are speaking.

Today we are talking about breath support.

I have three tips for you so that you can be clear and understood and people can hear you.

So we are going to focus on having a steady stream of air.

This is sort of the basis of English we speak on this continual release of air.

And that air is deeper and steadier, and that gives us the distinct American English sound.

So we are going to use breath support as the basis for everything.

Tip number one, we are going to start by breathing into the diaphragm.

To do this, you're going to put your fingers right down here.

And when you inhale, when you're learning how to do this, think about breathing into your stomach so your stomach moves too.

This is going to allow you to have a deeper and fuller and longer stream of air.

So again, start with breathing in with the diaphragm.

Number two, you can sit up tall, you can stand and relax your shoulders.

Relaxing your shoulders will relax your neck, and

it will allow you to use your diaphragm more to breathe in.

It will also allow you to keep everything open so that the airflow is not constricted when you are breathing out.

If I sit like this in a meeting, my voice is going to be very different than if I sit like this.

You can hear the quality of my voice, the loudness of my voice, my projection greatly changed.

So I'm going to sit with my body facing my listener, my hips, my shoulders and my feet.

And I'm going to turn my body when I want to speak with different people, when I am practicing my good breath support.

It's okay to have silence when you pause.

You can breathe in, fill up those lungs again, and get ready to say what comes next.

Use the phrase to take a break and to pause.

Once you get better, then you can make the pauses shorter.

As I make my pauses shorter, then I sound like I have a more natural flow.

So again, the three tips are breathe from the diaphragm, fill up those lungs, have good posture so that you can use your full vocal tract and it will not collapse on itself and not allow you to use good breath support and good projection.

It allows you to breathe deeper, to project more, and to be clear and confident in your speaking.
