The New Testament canon, that is the 27 books that make up the Christian New Testament today hasn't always been a thing.

It only became the standard canon in the late 4th century.

One of the very first people to make a closed New Testament canon was an evangelist named Marcion.

It consisted of 12 books, 10 books attributed to the Apostle Paul, his own edited version of the Gospel of Luke and his own work called Antitheses.

That final book apparently contrasted Jesus teachings with the Old Testament, showing that the Jewish God and Jesus were at odds with each other.

Marcion believed that Jesus was not the Jewish Messiah and that the never before seen supreme God of the universe sent Jesus to free humankind from the bondage of the evil and stupid creator of the world, the Jewish God.

When Marcion pitched his ideas to the clergy In Rome in 144, he was excommunicated.

But he was still able to spread his version of Christianity in the Eastern Roman Empire where it endured for centuries, especially in Syria.

Unfortunately, though, we have no surviving copies of Marcion's canon today.
