A study found that teen suicides plummeted in March of 2020, when schools shut down due to Covid.

But returning from online to in person schooling was then associated with a 12 to 18% increase in teen suicides.

The study found that prior to Covid, suicides among 12 to 18 year olds are highest during the months of and lowest during the summer months.

Schools that start in early August experience increases in teen suicides in August, whereas schools that start in September do not see youth suicide rates rise until September.

So being in school makes you want to die.

This seasonal pattern drastically changed In March of 2020, when the pandemic began.

The study found that youth suicides are closely tied with in person attendance.

Yeah, I mean, if you're online, you don't have to deal with the pressure of, like, pure politics and body image and the constant need to be, like, on and focused.

Probably a lot of these kids who were not at risk experienced a decline in their mental health from the social isolation that came with the pandemic.

But this study theorizes that the kids who were at high risk of suicide probably saw an improvement from their mental health because they were removed from harmful environments like bullying and social pressure.

And, Becca, I wonder how many school shootings were averted because of the pandemic.

The research also suggests that the reduction in suicide rates at the time of the year was unprecedented historically for teens.

And that when everyone went back to school, the increase in suicide rates when it resumed was not as sharp as it had been in previous years.

And this probably meant, like, everyone was kind of chill and.

Okay, since they were just, like, at home.

Maybe it'll be a better learning environment for her.

I mean, the authors do advise, like, they're not saying, like, close down schools, never go to school, just that they need more research on youth mental health and a deeper investigation into why does it decline for some students when school is actually in session and that, you know, we need future research on the consequences of bullying victimization and policies around access to mental health care and safe storage of guns.
