In today's video, we are going to be ranking Taiwanese politicians.

We should preface this though by saying that neither Alan and I are Taiwanese citizens.

Which means we are not trying to, nor do we wish to influence your voting decisions.

You should only vote for who you think best serves your needs.

Nor are we trying to make fun of other people's English ability.

Me and Alan are both speaking Chinese as a second language, and

so we understand more than anyone how difficult and sometimes embarrassing it can be to speak English in public.

It's all in good fun and we're just trying to get views on YouTube.

Arguably one of the more famous, not probably not the most famous, but

one of the most famous Taiwanese politicians.

He's also the head of Taiwan's Green party, or the DPP.

Born in Taipei in 1959, the same year as my mom.

Apparently he studied at Harvard, so I'm expecting good things out of him because he studied in America.

In the future, I will lead a new era of values based diplomacy.

That was probably a couple of decades ago.

So I imagine his English used to be a lot better.

So he can't make any grammatical mistakes.

you can tell he's kind of like struggling over a few words that are difficult to say, difficult to pronounce.

I'm just saying he's not enjoying himself.

And in fact, you have experience with public speaking.

Yeah, I gave a speech or a presentation for three hours, the second half of which in Chinese.

And shook me to my core of how inadequate my Chinese is.

But I'm not the president of an international country, so I feel a little bit like vindicated because my bad Chinese doesn't affect how my country interacts with other countries.

I don't think that their English ability should really affect anything.

I feel like it kicks in the sort of fight or flight response where, like, if it was me and I had to speak Chinese in a public setting, like a public speaking event, I would want to get the hell out of there.

But he went to Harvard, so he had to obviously speak English.

He probably went there 30 years ago, so he probably spoke a lot better English before.

I'm trying to list it as our greatest source of strength under the principles of.

It's hard because, like, there's a lot of S's that were there.

If Alan and I were doing this and people had to rank our Chinese, we would be an F 100%.

Even our English would probably be an A or a B. Yeah.

You had C is the first one we've listened to.

And you got to go like, sort of middle of the road.

And then we can probably update it accordingly.

But he's spending 90% of the time looking at the paper and then just looking up.

Because he's been media trained to make eye contact with the reporters, but

he's actually wishing that he could just stand and read this off the paper.

And I would like to point out as well, his pronunciation is not bad.
