This is such a common mistake that I hear with my students.

So to say the word chase, we are going to have that long a sound.

And to do that, you can see I am opening my mouth wide and then moving to a slight smile that is allowing my tongue to move from low in the mouth to in the middle of my mouth.

Two letters and that stand for one sound.

To make this sound, make sure that you start by touching the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth and then pull the tongue back into the middle of the mouth.

Now, for purchase, we are going to have a vowel change here.

The word purchase has the stress on syllable number one.

That syllable is going to be louder, longer and higher in pitch, and the vowel will be truer.

So in this case, we're going to have that er, Pur.

Then for the chess, we are going to have the schwa sound.

The schwa is a relaxed, unstressed vowel.

The key is that it is relaxed, short, quick and unstressed.
