This was a stop on our recent family road trip.

And today we're going to show you why this small city deserves a spot on your BC travel itinerary.

In this travel guide, we'll take you behind the scenes at a local trout hatchery, hike some of the scenic trails and enjoy a meal inside a converted fire hall.

Plus, we'll also go bowling at a brewery, tour historic train carriages, and

We have just arrived at the Kootenay Trout Hatchery.

This is just outside of Cranbrook, about 20 minutes outside of the city.

So, yes, we are bringing baby to look at some fish.

There's actually this area outside the building itself where you can see the trout swimming around.

And I think we're gonna get to see like the different stages of the trout as it is growing and progressing.

Basically, in these green holding tanks that you see behind me, this is where the trout start their line.

So each tank can hold 1350 liters of water.

And inside each individual tank, you can have up little fish, little trouts the size of my pinky finger that weigh one gram each.

So that means if we take all the green tanks you see behind me, you've got 720,000 fish.

So yeah, this is where the little trout start their lives here at the Kootenay Hatchery.

Which species of fish are raised in the hatchery?

Rainbow, Westlow, cutthroat and brook trout.

Shielded from the sun because you are so fair skinned little girl.

Two out of three of us definitely need it.

Not so much you, but right now we've arrived at Elizabeth Lake.

As our introduction, we kind of drove through the city, the business area, through the old historic downtown a little bit.

And yeah, we've arrived at this beautiful quiet spot here.

So since we are freshly arrived in Cranbrook, I thought I would share some first impressions and also compare it a little bit to what we saw in Fernie a few days ago.

So here in Cranbrook, what I'm noticing is that the mountains are a bit smaller.

They are more rounded, so they remind me of Sierras.

And also the climate is a lot drier, so we have a lot of grass and shrubbery.

The trees are also completely different, smaller trees.

We do have some forest off in the distance.

It's a lot warmer here than it was in Fernie.

What a difference just being an hour away.

I mean, this is the part of BC that I'm actually not as familiar with.

I'm getting to see a different side of the province and very happy to be here.

What a great place to go bird watching, to go to see other types of wildlife.

And I haven't seen a single soul hiking here, so not yet.

Elizabeth park is made up of 5.9 hectares of wetland.

And while it's a great place to go bird watching, we couldn't believe how many deer we saw roaming around.

They were out in full force and completely unbothered by our presence.

We also took a little break here to let baby girl practice her crawling.

So for the first meal in Cranbrook, we went to the family Thai restaurant.

And my goodness, we got to indulge in all of our Thai favorites.

Audrey and I used to live in Thailand for a little bit.

We're in Chiang Mai, so we have been craving Thai food since forever.

So I ended up getting pad Thai and you ended up getting the green coconut curry, which was so spicy I was crying and my sinuses were completely cleared.

So I thought it was the right amount of spice for me.

But yeah, definitely err on the side of caution.

Maybe go for two if you're not into super spicy food.

If you want to challenge yourself, go all the way up to five.

We enjoyed the food so much that we ended up getting dessert.

We Ended up getting the mango sticky rice and the deep fried banana as well.

Really nice food, really friendly people.

And our baby was screaming like crazy, so we couldn't really speak.

Anyways, it was a really great meal and definitely a place we'd recommend when you come to Cranbrook.

So now that we're traveling with a baby, we end up visiting a lot of parks and just spaces that she can also enjoy.
