In the wake of disaster last week, a community in Taiwan showed up.

Deadly floods crashed through Taiwan's Hualien county when a barrier lake burst its banks on the Matayan river.

Eighteen people, mostly in houses that were near the river, ended up losing their lives.

We arrived almost a week after, and the destruction that we saw was still just, you know, it was quite shocking, actually.

Down near the river, there are houses that were still buried in mud up to their rooftops.

30,000 ordinary people boarded trains with shovels and buckets to help, almost tripling the town's population in one day.

I'm not sure that anyone expected just how many people were going to go down to help.

We saw lots of families with small kids, you know, these tiny kids, you know, 10 or 11 with their little shovels, gym bros in their, like, vests and carrying big buckets and stuff, walking around, little old aunties and shopkeepers.

There was also this, like, sense of defiance and sense of hope that had come from so many people coming in to help.

It just must have been incredible when you arrived, but what was it like when you were leaving?

You know, we're following this crowd of thousands towards the station, and the locals have sort of lined to the side and they're shouting thank you and they're shouting jayo, which is a Mandarin chant of encouragement when they're handing out food and handing out cans of beer.

I really sort of struggle to describe what it felt like to be in that moment, because it was just such an incredible scene.

Yeah, it's just a big reminder of the good in people.
