It is a beautiful sunny Saturday here in the countryside and today we are going to a farm.

Adverbs of degree

We're going to pick some vegetables and then we're going to cook with them and I'm so excited.

The town of Aya has been developed in a way so that residents can coexist with nature and farm in a sustainable environment.

So this farm, it doesn't look like much but there's actually quite a few vegetables in here.

The concept is to grow the vegetables with nature, like naturally.

So it doesn't really look like a farmland but if you look really closely there are actually a few things here that we can pick up and take for lunch.

Can you tell that I've never harvested lettuce before?

These crops in particular are for private consumption from a farmer's personal natural garden.

Very beautiful color and they don't use any pesticides, no chemicals on their lettuce.

The next thing on our list of things to harvest is this rapeseed plant.

It's similar to canola and although it grows all over the place, it also happens to be edible.

So we're going to have some for lunch today.

The last thing on our list of things to harvest, these gigantic fresh carrots.

Once we gathered all our ingredients, we headed to the community kitchen to cook some lunch.

So this is what we're working with today.

I took the lettuce, the nanohana and the carrots.

And then I don't know where some of these, I don't know where these came from but we got the turnips and the mushrooms and the tomatoes from the farmer's market.

And then at the bottom here we have some fresh soba.

We got what is said to be the best soba in all of Kyushu right here.

I was pretty excited to work in a kitchen and learn some new skills but I could barely keep up with the boys and their extremely fast pace.

So it was a great chance to learn some new tricks and also try foods I'd never imagined eating before.

So this tempura is the petal of a tsubaki flower and they say it's really good and I should try it right now.

So I'm gonna do that while it's still warm.

Inside the tempura is like the flower petals and the little pollen, pollen-y sticks.

So our first dish is this natto soba with mushrooms and tomato.

A little natto has been cooked in white wine and garlic to get rid of the natto flavor.

And we have a soba salad with lettuce that I took from the ground like an hour ago.

And we have some nanohana peperoncino pasta.

So this is the flowers I took in the field and outside and it's cooked with some pasta.

It's very western, not very Japanese style but very cool.

Then we have some tempura from mushrooms and flower petals, tsubaki flower petals.

And finally some salads with more tomatoes, the carrots that I took from the garden, some turnip and the lettuce I took from the garden.

So amazing that I didn't even realize it was vegetarian.

Elsewhere in Japan you would pay a lot of money to eat like this.

Inside the grounds of Aya Castle are several workshops where visitors can participate in creating handmade fabrics or pottery.

The entire process seems easy, if you have proper hand-eye coordination at least.

For beginners it does take a little bit of practice though.

After that it's all a matter of personal sense and style.

I've got all afternoon to turn this into something.

So I'll give it my best shot, we'll see how it goes.

Once you get the hang of the process, it's actually really relaxing.

You can make anything from coasters to scarves here.

I decided to settle for a really simple placemat but I weaved every single color available into my design.

Once I was finished, my teacher kindly fixed up my placemat and packaged it for me.

Not gonna lie, I felt a bit proud of myself.

I used pretty much every color in my arsenal and I like how it turned out.

One thing I can say for sure though is that after trying it for myself, I really started to understand and appreciate the complexity of some of the designs in the gift shop.

As my month-long stay in Aya comes to a close, I realized that I noticed things now I would have normally missed a few weeks ago.

Like, I know how to spot a daikon radish from a mile away and I know how to eat these roadside flowers for lunch.

Living in Aya has been an eye-opening experience and has allowed me to really appreciate the earth's resources that we seem to take for granted in bigger cities.

My final full day in Aya was spent with you guys.

Here at the Honmono Center, I invited viewers to come visit Aya for themselves The weather was great and we had a lot of fun.

Even Kit was there and he managed to make a few new friends of his own.

With free wi-fi around the city and some of the nicest people in the whole world, this is a safe place to travel even if you're new to Japan.

I do hope that one day you decide to visit Aya for yourself.

I know it can be intimidating to venture out to the countryside but I promise that in Aya, you're in good hands.
