Have you ever been insulted and you didn't know what to say?

Well, I'm all about reducing conflict and the best way to reduce conflict is to have the right words, have the right tools in your toolkit the next time someone says something that derogatory to you or says something that in your gut feels like it was wrong.

The next time someone says something to you that is an insult, here's exactly what you say.

You look at them and with a very calm tone of voice and an inquisitive tone of voice say,

"That sounded like an insult. Was that your intent?"

Or "That sounded like a dig. Was that your intent?"

Or "That sounded sarcastic. Was that your intent?"

And it's really important that you divest emotionally when you're having a conversation with someone like this because it could be a misunderstanding.

It could be that they are really trying to insult you or they really are trying to be sarcastic.

So get clarity before you respond because what most mostly what happens when you get insulted, you get defensive and then you say something back and then that escalates unnecessarily.

So the next time someone insults you, don't get defensive.

Just take a step back, take a beat, take a breath and then simply ask a question and come from a place of inquiry.

It sounds like an insult. Was that your intent?

That sounded sarcastic. Was that your intent?

That sounded like a dig. Was that your intent?

Then you buy yourself some time so you can think about how you're going to respond to what they say next.

But the ultimate goal is that they know that they can't talk to you in that tone of voice or with those words again because you have set a boundary.
