The United States is on the brink of refinancing its entire debt.

The total debt is 37 trillion dollars and around 20 trillion dollars is about to be refinanced because it's about to expire.

And Donald Trump recently gave a visit to the chairman of the Fed to see the construction that is happening in the federal reserve in order to use that as a tool to pressure the Fed to lower down interest rates.

And Donald Trump made it clear, I don't care about the construction.

I don't care about what is happening over here.

What I care about is that I want you to lower down the interest rates by 3 percentage points, not just by 0.5% or 1%, but bring it down to 1%.

If you got us down to 1, we would save more than a trillion dollars basically with just a paper transfer.

You wouldn't be cutting costs of anything.

Just a move of the hand saying we are going to lower interest rates.

You would save a trillion dollars a year.

Will the government save 1 trillion dollars?

If you look at the structure of the US debt, you will see that it consists of multiple treasurer bills at different periods.

For example, we have 1-month treasurer bills, or we have 4 months, 2 years, up to 30 years, and each of them have different yields.

Now yields are simply a fancy word for a rate of return.

So on 1-month government bonds, we have 4.3%, but for 30-year government bonds, we have 5%.

When the bill expires, the government has to pay back the principal.

And as you can see that, for example, the treasurer bills that were created 6 months ago are about to expire today, and that means that the government has to somehow refinance them.

And the short-term treasurer bills must be consistently refinanced.

If we are talking about 30-year government bonds, then nobody cares about them because they are there for the next 30 years and not many people care about that.

But the presidency of Donald Trump is going to be 4 years, and all of these short-term government bonds must be refinanced during the time that he is going to be in office.

So he believes that if we lower down the interest rates, then we might actually refinance them at much lower interest rates.

Currently, the rates are anything between 4 to 4.5 percent, but if we bring them down to 1 percent, suddenly the government is going to save 1 trillion dollars, and the United States government will no longer have a deficit.

That sounds great in theory, but if you do something like that, it is going to have catastrophic effects, and I am not exaggerating at all.

To understand what's happening, we first have to understand how the US government accumulated 37 trillion dollars.

A lot of people have this wrong perception that if the federal reserve lowers down interest rates, then the government will be able to borrow money at a lower interest rate, and vice versa, which is why if we lower down interest rates by the fed, it's such an easy job to do, why aren't we doing that?

However, that's not how the system works.

You see, the government of the United States on one side, borrows money from investors on the other side.

Now, investors are anybody who have extra money and is willing to invest his money.

That could be me, that could be you, or it could be some kind of a hedge fund.

The person who is investing his money, he is investing that money with one mindset in mind, that he wants to make money on his money.

Let's say that you work super hard and now you have saved an extra hundred thousand dollars.

I mean, saving a hundred thousand dollars is a good achievement if you are just starting out.

And now, are you willing to give that money for free to anybody?

Now, you want your money to work for you, so suddenly you build wealth and create generational wealth.

So, you will only loan it to the US government if the government of the United States will provide you with interest.

And when you are investing, there are two most important factors that you always look at.

The lower the risk, the safer the investment.

If your friend would come and ask you and tells you, Oh, Michael, please give me your hundred thousand dollars for my startup.

Will you give it to him knowing that he always plays video games and he's lazy and he doesn't even have a job?

Most likely you won't even give him the money.

And secondly, even if you provide him with that money and so on, you will charge him a thousand percent interest rate.

Now, second thing that you care about is the rate of return.

With your friend, the risks are very high, but with the US government, the risks are very low because if the government won't be able to pay you back, it can always tax the American citizens and raise money and pay you back.

So you're not worried about the ability of the government of the United States to pay you back.

I'm not saying that you trust the US government more than you trust your best friend, but I'm simply telling you that if you look at the facts, when it comes to your credit score, the government of the United States has a much better chance to pay you back than your friend who is lazy and playing video games all the time.

Now, this is a very interesting thing because the rate of return depends on the risk that you are taking, but as a smart investor, you always want to make a rate that is slightly higher than inflation.

So if inflation is 2%, then you will accept anything above 2% depends on the risk.

If it's a risk-free investment, then you are ready to accept 3 or 4%.

If inflation is 5%, then you will accept everything above 5%.

Because if you are making 4% and inflation is 5%, then you are losing money.

Because inflation simply means that money is losing its value.

It means that the dollar is being devalued.

So if your dollars are being devalued at 5% and you are making 3% on the other side, then you are losing 2% in interest rate, which is why you first take into consideration the inflation and then you will take the real that is above inflation.

And that's what investors do on the other side.

So the US government offers these treasurer bills between 1 month up to 30 years and then it auctions them.

If the government will offer 3%, then the investors accept, that is going to be the yield on these 1-month treasurer bills.

If investors won't accept 4.3%, for example, then the government will have to offer a much higher interest rate.

And the government will continue offering higher and higher interest until there will be enough investors to accept this investment from the US government and loan their money to the US government so that the government can spend it on whatever the United States wants and needs.

So the interest rate on the debt of the United States is not being set by the federal reserve.

The federal reserve has nothing to do with the debt of the United States.

The federal reserve has nothing to do with the deficit of the United States.

It's the supply and demand in the bond market that determines at what rate the United States will borrow its money.

So the Fed can lower down the interest rates to 0%, or to 1%, or to negative 100%.

Now, it doesn't mean that the government will be able to borrow money from the Fed from the investors at such a low interest rate.

But wait a second, it doesn't all make sense.

What you are saying is absolutely nonsense because when the Fed lowers down interest rates, the cost of borrowing becomes more accessible so the government can refinance at a lower rate.

Now, the reason that it works like that is because on one side, you have the investors.

When investors look at the Federal Reserve, they consider the Federal Reserve as the most independent entity that governs inflation in the United States.

So when the Federal Reserve lowers down interest rates, all these investors believe that inflation is so low in the United States that it makes sense to lower down interest rates.

Maybe the United States is going through a deflationary period where prices are going down, just like it's happening in Japan, and that's why the Fed is lowering down interest rates.

That means that the value of the dollar is rising.

On the other side, if the Federal Reserve is increasing the interest rates, that means that there is a problem with inflation and the investors will accept a much higher interest rate.

So the reason that these investors believe the Federal Reserve so much is because they assume that this is a very independent entity whose first priority is to manage inflation in the United States and not follow the wish and the desires of the White House.

So if suddenly, if you force the Federal Reserve to lower down interest rates because the White House said so, these investors are not stupid.

They are not simply going to follow the Federal Reserve.

They are not going to simply follow the White House just because the White But what if the government still decides to offer these treasurer bills at 1% interest rates, and investors are not willing to buy them?
