Living alone in an abandoned elementary school is already rare and amazing.

But when you pair that with the school being tucked deep into the Japanese mountains, you get this man.

I stumbled on him a few years back, and he kindly invited me to stick around for a while.

Before I knew it, a lifelong friendship had been born, and I would go back to visit him every chance that I got.

But little did I know that this visit would be completely different.

It's been nearly two years since I've been able to meet up with Yohei, or Yo-chan.

I popped in a while back when I was passing through the area, but he wasn't here.

So this time I did the adult thing, and I messaged him.

The first time I ever met Yo-chan was at the beginning of the pandemic.

I stumbled across this place, came in to look around, and saw Yo-chan just walking around in his pajamas.

This is where I got my first peek at just how much things were starting to change for Yo-chan.

His coffee business really took off during the pandemic, sending him into a frenzy of roasting coffee beans, trying to keep up with all the orders from shops, cafes, and restaurants.

He was clearly in good spirits, but it also wasn't hard to tell that he was starting to stretch himself a bit thin with all the things that he loves.

A good place to be, but tiring nonetheless.

It sounds like, but it's just time alone.

Yeah, it's been really fun, but I'm tired.

Lately, I haven't been coming here as much.

I've been busy with a lot of things, but every time I come here, I feel like I love this place.

Then there's just like a big bed in the middle.

Every time I come here, when we met for the first time, you had like one guest room.
