And today is a very special video because I will be speaking to a fantastic individual who's here to share her inspiring story on how she was able to get her dream job in the industry that she's wanted to get into for a while.

And she is also a successful top-notch resume student of mine.

So Monica, thank you so much for joining me here today.

And I tell people for the past two years that my journey is because of top-notch resume.

So I really want you to be able to share that story, Monica.

So you reached out to me actually randomly over Instagram.

I was reading through my direct messages.

Usually it's my assistant that does it, but that day I happened to see your message pop up and you sent me this little post that you had put up on your Instagram about you having written, I believe, an article in a yoga magazine.

And then you told me how, you know, having taken top-notch resume, you were able to get that dream job here at Yoga Journal and you're working with clients who are the largest names in the yoga and wellness industry.

So anyways, I don't want to give away too much to everything I basically did, but why don't you share your story?

Tell us what went on before all this happened with this dream job that you're in and how you got here.

My background in school, I studied urban studies and planning.

And I was, the reason why I studied it is because when it comes to the social justice work that I do, I realized that not a lot of folks of color were a part of the planning process.

And so I was asking myself, well, how can I get communities engaged with things that are a little bit more boring?

I can create some article content I love to write.

From there, I collaborated with a woman named Robin E.

Bora, and she was a founder of Wear Your Voice magazine.

It's an intersectional feminist publication.

And I started to create viral campaigns for her.

And that is what led me to becoming eventually the co-founder.

Robin E., she was the one who was funding the digital publication at the time.

So that was a large economic strain on her.

And we had constantly been looking for people to be investors and finance Wear Your Voice, but because it's more like radical and at the time, intersectional feminism was a thing, but it wasn't really the thing that it is today.

And so this was like summer of 2018, Wear Your Voice is getting tons of support and love, and yet the funding isn't there.

So you know, it came to a conversation between her and I of, you know, it made most sense for me to leave the organization.

And also at the same time, I started to get into like spiritual and wellness, and like I started hosting meditation ceremonies and, you know, rituals around the country.

So I was like, how can I have a background in digital strategy with my heart centered healing work?

So what had happened in 2018 was I left Wear Your Voice, and I had invested some of my own, you know, money into it, and my own time.

And so I had no money, I'm living in the Hollywood Hills, my apartment is extremely expensive.

And I had literally, I'd probably say about $400 to my name.

I was just like, I literally have nothing to lose.

I don't, I started looking up like how to update your resume on YouTube, because I had, you know, been a co founder for four years, I had never, you know, I hadn't updated my resume in years.  Tumbled upon Linda Rayner, and your content on YouTube was just like, so amazing.

I'm like, I'm getting so much information just from the free content that she has to offer.

I wonder what would happen if I just invested in this course she keeps talking about.

I took top notch resume, I digested it in one night, I think I finished everything in two days, I was just like, in it, the information was so amazing.

And like, you also taught me how to have confidence over the things that I've already done.

And that was huge for me, because something I had been asking myself was like, well, I don't know how this could be a tangible skill that I can, you know, relate to a potential new client.

Like, how would, how could I even showcase my work in this way?

And you showed me step by step of how to see my inherent gifts.

So I created my top notch resume, and Yoga Journal, Yoga Journal is the world's largest yoga and wellness magazine.

So side note to like 2012, I was doing a yoga meditation and asana sequence.

And I was like, everyone needs to, like journal after they do yoga, like there's so many profound thoughts, maybe I should make a yoga journal.

So being a digital strategist, like, let me look up and see if I can purchase a domain yoga journal.com.

And not only is it taken, it's a publication that's been around since 1975.

So I was like, they took my idea, I remember telling myself, I have to have access to this  But like life happens, I forget about this yoga journal book that I want to create.

Until I take your course, remember that all of these things that I want to do is like an opportunity for me again, to like reinvent myself from, you know, being in this publication for four years.

I truly lost a sense of my identity until I took your course.

When I took your course, that's when I realized all of the things about myself had forgotten about and how I can translate that into new opportunities into new careers into new fields into new industries.

And so I start looking up, I'm like, yoga, digital strategists, and many jobs came up, but I saw yoga journal come up and I was like, oh, I forgot about this idea I had.

And I was like, World's largest yoga magazine, they probably won't respond to me, but I'll do it anyways.

And so I sent in my resume, I did like this little questionnaire that we had and two weeks later, I saw this email in my inbox, it was really simple, all lower caps, and it said yoga journal job.

And I was like, hey, Monica, can you get on a call?

And this happens to me so often when people see my resume, they always say that was the best resume I've ever seen.

Like hands down.  And I tell people all the time, I said, Linda Rainer.

Yeah, so from there, they wanted me to be their digital strategist and to move to Colorado.

That was like a big adjustment being a Californian girl.

But I encouraged them to continue to engage with me.

They were so impressed by conversations that we had, that they basically let me create my own little bubble in this large organization.

And from there, they invited me this year to be their ambassador for 2020.

And this year, they asked me if I would, you know, originally, it was supposed to be going around the country for yoga journal, but I'm producing content videos, I'm in the print magazine, this is my first time being in an actual print magazine.

So it's just been a huge blessing and from working with yoga journal, I've been able to leverage, you know, clients who are some of the leaders in the yoga and wellness industry.

And like I said, everyone tells me all the time, that was the best resume I've ever seen.

And I love how you incorporated, you know, because I've and I talked about this in my videos to the idea of visualizing what it is that you want to achieve and putting it out there and then letting it go, but still working towards it.

And everything just kind of fell into place, having taken top notch resume, but then you putting yourself out there and reaching out to the right opportunity just at the right time.

So okay, so let's backtrack a little bit then.

And let's talk about what your resume looks like before you took top notch resume.

What was going on in your mind when you were trying to figure out, you know, your own resume before you found top notch resume and my course and all of those videos?

I think at the time, before top notch resume, I didn't have a system, I didn't have a process.

I was just kind of blindly going in and okay, well, I think this is sounds good.

And you know, maybe I should just add, it was just so basic, just like here are the things that I've done.

I was focusing more on soft skills, which, okay, yeah, I'm a people person, we're all empaths nowadays, we're all doing the crystals and the chakras, like what are tangible skills that I can actually translate to a client.

So I don't remember which module it was, but you were saying like, you could have this one particular job, you don't need to translate that on paper as that I've worked as a sales technician or something, manage like three databases, whatever, but what are the metrics?

What are the hard skills that you can apply to any industry?

And then also, the tip that you gave about going and looking at what, okay, if you want this job in this industry, go look on, you know, job databases and see what they're looking for and how you can apply your resume to these things that they're asking for in a job resume.

Because if that's what they're asking for, most likely, if you put that in your resume, that's going to ping them and get them alerted and excited.

So it turned it into like, oh, I'm just creating this resume to create a resume to, I'm actually having a conversation with a potential client.
