One study found that when men were given budgets to create their ideal opposite sex friend, they invested more in physical attractiveness than did women, providing additional evidence that men may view cross-sex friendships as avenues for potential mating opportunities.

And given the predictive nature of friendships turning into romantic relationships, and in some cases, male partners leaving the romantic partner for a female friend, it's unsurprising that women are typically wary of other women who prefer to have male friendships, which unfortunately offers us an explanation as to why these women are, like, facing aggression and ostracization from their female peers.
