The imperative

Please welcome to the show, Chester Bennington.

You know, I was in the audience in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago when you were at the iHeartRadio Music Summit.

And to see you and Mike were up on stage.

When we sat down and heard this single, Heavy, for the first time, they said, you'll never guess who this is.

And so we sat around, no one could figure it out.

And when they told us it was you, you liked that?

And that means that we did something different and new and unexpected.

So I hate to put things in a box, but this is what we call pop radio.

But you guys have been doing, you know, the rock radio interviews for years.

Have you ever had a song like this that was released for all of us, all four of us?

I think, I mean, you know, when we first came out, One Step Closer was the song that got released first, and then eventually In The End came out and crossed over.

But that was like a year after the record came out, I think.

It was like, that song took us into a different place.

And then I think the only other song that kind of crossed over would have been Numb.

As an artist, did it drive you a little nuts knowing that we would play Numb and then play like a Janet Jackson song right next to it?

I mean, for me, really, I tweeted out the other day, creativity is too big to be put in a box.

And inspiration is also too big to be, you know, to come from just one source.

And when you're in a band like Linkin Park, what I love most about it is it's like being in a new band every time we make a record.

I think the only reason why Meteora is so similar to Hybrid Theory was because we felt kind of pressured to, and not in a bad way, but the success of Hybrid Theory was so big and so quick and so unexpected.

And it was like, I think we should just do that again.

It was almost a very naive perspective of what we could do creatively.

But we knew, I mean, I think if you just listen to those first two records, like there's hints of like, you know, there's breaking the habit, there's somewhere I belong, there's pushing me away.

And in the end, all these songs are pop songs, you know, and we have that element to the  And so, I mean, I love Janet Jackson.

But wait, I wanted to like, what's an artist that you love that you would be, your fans would be surprised that you listen to?

She's also another artist that like has made it for me growing up wanting to be a musician going, you know, well, look at this really strong woman who can like reinvent herself on every single album.

I was singing that song in the bathroom as I was getting ready.

And I was like, man, between Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes, like I've got a song in my head literally all day long.

This is, of course, Chester Bennington from Linkin Park.

Did you know, and I'm sure Chester knows this, it's the biggest selling debut album of all time.

So I'm thinking, gosh, you know what I'm thinking about?

Well, look, you know, I've been working here at Z100 since 1988.

And we play them like some, for a while there are rotations on our powers where like every one hour and 20 minutes we play the same song over and over.
