Well students at the University of Houston held a vigil today for the victims of Tuesday's terrorist attack.

Now terrorists claimed the lives of at least 26 people in Kashmir increasing tensions between Pakistan and India.

Organizers say that the victims were targeted for being Hindu and the attack was meant to terrorize a community that has been silenced for too long.

These were all men, these were all Hindus and they were all massacred purely for the fact that they followed.

It didn't matter who they supported, it didn't matter where they from, where they were from, it didn't matter anything other than the fact that they were Hindus.

Well the victims in the attack haven't all been identified.

Even though this is happening more than 8,000 miles away from us in Houston, Fox 26's Rashi Vats explains why this impacts our community.

Well did you know that 40 to 45,000 members of the Kashmiri diaspora live in the United States and many here in Houston.

On 19th of January 1990, the whole population came onto the road.

He left from Kashmir in 1990 and now lives in Katy.

He is the co-founder of the Global Kashmiri Pundit Diaspora, which is a civil society movement with the goal to move the world's conscience about the plight of their Kashmiri Hindu community.

Now the Indian controlled part of Kashmir, there's a resort town called Palagam and that's where the terrorist attack happened.

What is very disturbing is that the terrorists, they identified the victims, whether they are Hindus or Muslims.

There's a tumultuous history in that area of Kashmir for the past 700 years.

In 1990 during civil unrest and genocide, Kashmiri Hindus were given the choice to leave or be killed.

Amit Raina, who lives in Houston, like Kaul, was one of the hundreds of thousand Kashmiri Hindus that fled.

It's a grim reminder of the brutal past we had.

I mean, it took me back to 1990 when I was a eight, nine year old kid and what we had to go through, the experiences my community had to go through back then, the pain, the anguish, the brutality, which was, you community had to go through that whole genocide.

This needs to be treated as a war and there has to be a drastic step to contain, to save lives.

The radicalized mindsets, the jihadi mindsets, that is where we are having this fight.

We don't have confirmation on who these seven suspects are, but here's what we do know.

The prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, says that, quote, every terrorist and their backers will be punished.

The country has closed its main border crossing with Pakistan, expelled its military diplomats and suspended a landmark water sharing treaty.

Pakistan has denied any involvement in that attack.

Both countries, India and Pakistan, have nuclear weapons and tensions are high.

We do know that President Trump supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi from India.
