Istanbul is a truly vast city of many parts and is quite confusing to newly arrived travellers.

So Andrew is heading for one of the best places to get an overview of its geography, the Galata Tower, built by the Genoese in 1348 as the Tower of Christ.

He's joined by travel writer Safet Emre Tonguc who has written a guidebook to Istanbul, so he is eminently qualified to explain the importance of the city's unique location.

It has a history of 8,500 years and people have been living here during the Neolithic times.

But then Constantine built this city as the new capital city of Roman Empire.

So the other name for Istanbul is Nova Roma, the new Rome.

As Rome was built on seven hills, Constantine built the city on seven hills.

When you're looking at the old city of Istanbul, you can identify the seven hills because there are seven mosques.

So wherever there's a giant mosque, that's one of the first seven hills where Istanbul started.

The seven hills of Istanbul are found on its historic peninsula, south of the sea inlet, the Golden Horn.

You know, Golden Horn is the water inlet which separates the old city from the new city.

Because the Byzantines lived there throughout the centuries.

They didn't have the bridges, so they always called this the other side.

Everywhere we look, the city just continues on infinitely.

But there's also these little villages and neighborhoods and communities.

It functions as a whole, but it also functions in parts.

Well, first of all, the best way to discover Istanbul is to get lost in its streets without any map.

Believe me, the roads will lead you to incredible places and you will discover how magical this city is.

Safet wants to give Andrew a taste of what visitors to Istanbul would have experienced in the early 20th century.

This area, there was a lot of gentrification going on.

So that's why a lot of houses have been restored to their former glory.

And the intellectuals of the city moved here.

This is called Serdar-i Ekrem Street, one of my favorite streets in the city.

The streets will lead them to a place with a special significance for Safet.

It was one of the first buildings where there was electricity, where there was running water, where they had a lift.

I mean, I imagine the travelers in the 19th century were just overwhelmed by this beauty.

And you know, from outside, it looks very European, but here in the main hall, it's very Oriental because it was built in the capital city of Ottoman Empire.

That's why if you look here, you can see all the Oriental elements.

This room has that feeling of that era, this golden era of travel when young people were coming on the grand tour, nobility, the elite.

And I can just imagine them sitting here writing letters home and how exotic this must have felt for them.

Especially the ones who came with Oriental Express.

You could feel the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Istanbul right here in this hotel.

Remembering his visit to the Turkish Bath in Mardin, Andrew has booked a more extensive session at this stunning hammam in the Caglolu neighborhood, built in 1741.

Today, Mesir Kursad is going to give Andrew the full massage treatment.

He invites Andrew to lay on the heated marble slab known as a gobek taji.

To avoid injury, he needs to relax and trust in Kursad's skilled manipulation.

Lemon-scented soap is foamed by a cotton sieve, adding to Andrew's sensory experience.

His muscles are vigorously massaged and his sinews stretched, almost to breaking point.

A final rinse and heated towels complete the treatment.

The experience is so intense, a period of recovery in a warm, tranquil space is advised.

I feel all floaty, like a dream, like I'm levitating.

Andrew's watery contemplation leads to a bigger realisation.
