  • When it comes to connecting with people, one habit that stands out more than any other is giving genuine compliments.

  • Most people know this and they know how powerful it is in building likability, but they often fall into the trap of giving generic praise, such as "you're a great teacher."

  • Let's refine this approach. First, the power of specificity.

  • Instead of saying "you're a great teacher", say "I love the way you attend to each student individually. You're such a great teacher."

  • Notice how this added detail, not only makes the compliment more believable, it makes it more memorable.

  • Second, personalize it.

  • If you want to add an extra layer of connection, use their name!

  • Compare again. "I love the way you attend to each student individually. You're such a great teacher."

  • "Hey James, I love the way you attend to each and every single student individually. You're such a great teacher."

  • It's a small tweak but it adds personal touch and it goes a long way.

  • Third, authenticity is key.

  • Remember the foundation of a meaningful compliment is sincerity. Be genuine in your admiration and steer clear of flattery.

  • People can feel the difference.

  • Let me show you what I mean.

  • Craig. I love the way the glasses that you're wearing. [It] brings out your eyes.

  • Peter. You are one of the most handsome and tallest guys I've ever met.

  • Can we, can we give it a go?

  • Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.

  • Look at your hair. It really brings out your personality.

  • I don't think anyone's ever done that before.

  • What are they, what do they call that? Poorly made birds nest?

  • How about, how about 37-year-old balding guy who bought a cheap wig?

  • One more important rule to keep in mind: after giving sincere compliments, not the ones my team bloody gave me, don't ask for any favors.

  • Compliments should be a gift, not a transaction.

  • And in the spirit of knowledge application, think of one of your friends here on social media, tag them in the comments and practice sharing with them a sincere compliment here.

  • I'll kick us off with one.

  • @dragonslayer 1984 Eugene. I love the way you're always able to identify my biggest insecurities and exploit them online.

  • Fxxk you, Eugene.

  • That's good, Rav. I love that.
