What a day to celebrate Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, who has officially announced that he is transgender. Earlier today, Elliot shared a lengthy post to social media, as he gushed over how “lucky” he feels to be able to be sharing the news and to have arrived at this point in his life. He began by thanking the trans community, saying QUOTE, “I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can't begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I've been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community. Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place. I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society.” He also explained that he will be using both he/him and they/them pronouns, describing himself as transgender and non-binary, meaning that his gender identity is neither man nor woman. But despite this being a time for celebration, Elliot went on to admit that with the announcement comes a wave of fear, adding, “I also ask for patience. My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now, and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared.” He explained that with this newfound sense of self comes fear of “invasiveness, hate, jokes and violence,” and that when looking at the full picture, the statistics and discrimination toward trans people are “staggering.” By concluding his statement, Elliot vows to continue to use his voice and his platform as he “refuses to be silenced” in the face of these astounding attacks. He said QUOTE, “I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive. To all the trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.” Prior to his transition, Elliot was one of the more visible gay actors in Hollywood, but with this new announcement, he is now added to a growing number of trans celebrities, including Laverne Cox, Trace Lysette, and Brian Michael Smith to name a few. Since this morning, Elliot has received massive amounts of praise from fans around the world, who admire his bravery and courage, and for being a beacon of hope among others, especially in the LGBTQ community. Elliot's wife, Emma Portner shared a sweet message on her own Instagram, writing QUOTE, “I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot's existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much.” GLAAD's director of Transgender Media, Nick Adams, also shared an emotional statement about Elliot, writing, “Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on-screen, and has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people. He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people. All transgender people deserve the chance to be ourselves and to be accepted for who we are. We celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page today.” Both Netflix and The Umbrella Academy also congratulated him, as well as a ton of Elliot's peers and fans. Tyler Oakley tweeted, “Sending so much love, @TheElliotPage! Thank you for being you.” Pop duo Tegan and Sara wrote, “Profound love and admiration for you @TheElliotPage!! Your strength, bravery and activism - not to mention all the art you contribute to this earth - is truly special. Thank you for being so open about your journey and for fighting so hard to make the world a better place.” And James Charles tweeted, “Congratulations, king!! So happy for you!!!” We couldn't be more thrilled for Elliot to take on this new journey of self discovery, and can't wait to witness all the magic he is sure to create in the near future. But as Elliot previously mentioned, being trans is also being met with harassment, threats and even abuse from others who aren't accepting, which is something actress Laverne Cox recently encountered.
