  • What a day to celebrate Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, who has officially announced that he is transgender.

  • Earlier today, Elliot shared a lengthy post to social media, as he gushed over howluckyhe feels to be able to be sharing the news and to have arrived at this point in his life.

  • He began by thanking the trans community, saying QUOTE, “I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey.

  • I can't begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.

  • I've been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community.

  • Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place.

  • I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society.”

  • He also explained that he will be using both he/him and they/them pronouns, describing himself as transgender and non-binary, meaning that his gender identity is neither man nor woman.

  • But despite this being a time for celebration, Elliot went on to admit that with the announcement comes a wave of fear, adding,

  • “I also ask for patience. My joy is real, but it is also fragile.

  • The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now, and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared.”

  • He explained that with this newfound sense of self comes fear ofinvasiveness, hate, jokes and violence,”

  • and that when looking at the full picture, the statistics and discrimination toward trans people arestaggering.”

  • By concluding his statement, Elliot vows to continue to use his voice and his platform as herefuses to be silencedin the face of these astounding attacks.

  • He said QUOTE, “I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer.

  • And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.

  • To all the trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.”

  • Prior to his transition, Elliot was one of the more visible gay actors in Hollywood, but with this new announcement, he is now added to a growing number of trans celebrities, including Laverne Cox, Trace Lysette, and Brian Michael Smith to name a few.

  • Since this morning, Elliot has received massive amounts of praise from fans around the world, who admire his bravery and courage, and for being a beacon of hope among others, especially in the LGBTQ community.

  • Elliot's wife, Emma Portner shared a sweet message on her own Instagram, writing QUOTE,

  • “I am so proud of @elliotpage.

  • Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world.

  • I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day.

  • Elliot's existence is a gift in and of itself.

  • Shine on sweet E. Love you so much.”

  • GLAAD's director of Transgender Media, Nick Adams, also shared an emotional statement

  • about Elliot, writing, “Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on-screen, and

  • has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people.

  • He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people.

  • All transgender people deserve the chance to be ourselves and to be accepted for who we are.

  • We celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page today.”

  • Both Netflix and The Umbrella Academy also congratulated him, as well as a ton of Elliot's peers and fans.

  • Tyler Oakley tweeted, “Sending so much love, @TheElliotPage! Thank you for being you.”

  • Pop duo Tegan and Sara wrote, “Profound love and admiration for you @TheElliotPage!! Your strength, bravery and activism - not to mention all the art you contribute to this earth - is truly special.

  • Thank you for being so open about your journey and for fighting so hard to make the world a better place.”

  • And James Charles tweeted, “Congratulations, king!! So happy for you!!!”

  • We couldn't be more thrilled for Elliot to take on this new journey of self discovery, and can't wait to witness all the magic he is sure to create in the near future.

  • But as Elliot previously mentioned, being trans is also being met with harassment, threats and even abuse from others who aren't accepting, which is something actress Laverne Cox recently encountered.
