  • Between April and June of this year, the nation's gross domestic product decreased by 9.5%.

  • And even though that's not as bad as many economists expected, it would be.

  • The GDP has never dropped that much that quickly.

  • At the worst point of the great recession, the financial crisis that hit between 2007 in 2009 America's greatest quarterly drop wasn't this dramatic.

  • What about the Great Depression, which peaked in the early 19 thirties?

  • Experts say it's hard to compare the new drop to that event because quarterly GDP figures were it being recorded.

  • Yet the reason for the new decreases, the coronavirus pandemic.

  • With businesses forced to shut down and most of Americans under stay at home orders In the spring, CNN reports that more than 20 million American jobs were lost.

  • This abruptly ended the longest economic expansion in American history, The hopeful news was that in May and June, the economy started to rebound as America reopened, adding millions of jobs in each of those months and setting records for job creation in each of those months.

  • And the July jobs report, which is due out next week, is also expected to be a good one.

  • But overall, the economy has not recovered what it lost earlier this year.

  • The federal government has set aside trillions of dollars to try to limit the damage.

  • This has come in the form of loans to help companies extra benefits for people who've lost their jobs and check sent out directly to many Americans, lawmakers are debating another package of these stimulus measures.

  • As we speak across America, the situation varies greatly for different people in different places.

  • Earlier this month, the state of California ordered many of its businesses to shut down a second time as coronavirus cases and deaths rose again in the state.

  • Indoor restaurants, movie theaters, gyms, museums, zoos, they're all affected.

  • Perseverance, Atlas, Ingenuity and Mars Perseverance is the name of NASA's latest rover to take off for the Red Planet.

  • The $2.7 billion project becomes one of six active missions NASA has to Mars in addition to one in cooperation with the European Space Agency.

  • It got off the ground on Thursday morning in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the back of NASA's Atlas rocket.

  • But it'll be February of next year before perseverance is set to land on the surface of the Red Planet and get toe work.

  • The drone rover is carrying a drone helicopter.

  • Ingenuity is its name.

  • Unlike the perseverance, vehicle ingenuity is not carrying any scientific instruments.

  • But the $23 million helicopter is expected to help scientists know if flights like this are possible on Mars.

  • After nearly a decade of planning with thousands of engineers, scientists and specialists, NASA's latest mission to Mars charts new realms of exploration.

  • This is the first time in history where we're going to go to Mars with an explicit mission toe.

  • Find life on another world.

  • The launch of NASA's Perseverance Rover starts a seven month journey through space before it's expected landing on the Red Planet's Jez, or a crater the side of a lake formed more than 3.5 billion years ago.

  • Their perseverance will look for evidence that Mars was once inhabited, collecting samples that eventually return to Earth to be studied for signs of ancient microbial life.

  • Meanwhile, the mission will also pave the way for new life to arrive.

  • We're gonna take the carbon dioxide atmosphere of Mars, and we're gonna turn it into oxygen so that when humans get there, we know that we know that we know that we're gonna be able to create the oxygen necessary for life support.

  • Expected to land in mid February of 2021 the two year mission also promises new perspectives on Mars.

  • The perseverance is equipped with microphones to share sounds of the Red Planet for the first time.

  • It also has 23 cameras, with new features like zoom, color and video capturing capabilities.

  • Also along for the ride.

  • The first helicopter to attempt flight on another planet.

  • If it's successful, the new technology could be used its scouts on future missions.

  • As the push to explore Mars forges on Lynda Kinkade, CNN for pretending to 10 room.

  • This almost looks more like a video game car than a car car.

  • It is a car car, but you can't drive it on the street Street.

  • The new Lamborghini ascends SCV 12 is built for the track.
